Centrado en la Batalla de las Termópilas (480 a.C), –confrontación de la segunda Guerra Médica entre el Imperio persa de Jerjes I y la alianza de polis griegas lideradas por Esparta–, se realiza un comentario de texto completo elegido de una fuente primaria –“Leónidas espera a los persas en las Termópilas”, Libro XI, Biblioteca Histórica, Diodoro de Sicilia–.

“HERODOTUS” Summer Courses 2019
“Greco-Persian Wars: Geopolitical & Strategic Approaches of the International System
in the 5th c. BC”
June 23rd – June 29th 2019 and/or
June 30th – July 6th 2019
“HERODOTUS” is an interdisciplinary course that combines history, strategy, geopolitics, war- fare, international relations, leadership and cultural studies. As such it provides a comprehensive examination of the 5th c. BC conflicts between the Greeks (Hellenes) and the Persian Empire, in relation to the modern geostrategic environment of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
The course is aimed at students with a special interest in the ancient history, strategy and geopolitics, military officials and cadets, historians, researchers and to each interested person.
The course will cover, among others:
• The geopolitics of the ancient Mediterranean and the geopolitical importance of the Eastern Mediterranean – Middle East strategic environment in the course of History.
• The grand strategies of the Greek city-states and the Persian Empire
• Α comparative analysis of the Leader
• The origins of the conflict and the main campaigns, the morphology of the battlefields, the conduct of the battles, the tactics etc.
• The ancient weapon technology, the ancient Athenian triremes and their technology.
• Visits to battlefields, archaeological sites and relevant museums. Participants will have the opportunity to:
• visit, during the course, some of the most famous battlefields of history: Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis, Plataea
• examine the conduct and the analysis of the battles in the exact battlefields they actually took place
• visit to the relevant museums amplifying the learning experience
A group of military historians, militaries and specialists in battle analysis, strategic studies, international relations and geopolitics are gathered together to re-enact the historic battles of the Greco-Persians Wars.
