Tridax Procumbens

Ayurveda can be considered the best ethnological source for naturally obtained drugs for wound healing property. Numerous drugs have been described in different texts for wound healing property, but particularly a few of them have been screened scientifically. One of such potent ayurvedic herbs, Ekdandi, Tridax procumbens from the family Asteraceae is described in this present article. An effort has been put into describing the plant for its wound healing attribute from both modern and Ayurvedic prospects in the present review.

Tridax procumbens Linn. is a wild plant, found as weed throughout India. The plant is native of tropical America and naturalized in tropical Africa, Asia, and Australia. Local people knew it as "Ghamara", in English popularly called 'coat buttons' and is dispensed for "Bhringraj" by some of the practitioners for hair growth in Ayurveda. The Pharmacognostical studies give pharmacopoeial standards like physical constant, leaf constant. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, carotenoids, flavonoids, fumaric acid, β-sitosterol, saponins and tannins. It is richly endowed with carotenoids, saponins, oleanolic acid and ions like sodium, potassium and calcium. Luteolin, glucoluteolin, quercetin and isoquercetin have been reported from its flowers. It has known for its number of pharmacological activities like hepatoprotective activity, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antidiabetic activity, hypotensive effect, immunomodulating property, anticancer activity, antioxidant activity, bronchial catarrh, dysentery, diarrhoea and to prevent falling of hair promotes the growth of hair, and antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The leaf juice possesses antiseptic, insecticidal and parasiticidal properties, as a remedy against conjunctivitis and is used also to check haemorrhage from cuts, bruises and wounds insect repellent. This review focus on folk occurrence and the wide phytochemicals and pharmacological activities of weed Tridax procumbens.

The study highlights the fabrication of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) by fresh leaves of Tridax procumbens (TP), an herbal medicinal plant. The bio-reduction of auric chloride ion (Au +3) is quite rapid, readily to be performed at room temperature. This study describes a rapid and eco-friendly synthesis of TP-GNPs are be done using TP leaf extract in a single pot process and is observed when the medium turns into purple color with the addition of aqueous Au +3. The formation of TP-GNPs is verified by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The possible functional groups of TP leaf extract and their changes after treating with aqueous auric chloride are evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The size of synthesized TP-GNPs is measured by dynamic light scattering analysis, and morphology is examined by transmission electron microscopy in nano range and energy dispersive X-ray spectrum confirming the presence of gold. The average size of TP-GNPs is ~7 nm and monodispersed. Further, we apply anti-bacterial activity on both Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, and the results suggest that the TP-GNPs suspension exhibits anti-bacterial activity.

The research was conducted to investigate the nutritional efficacy of fermented mixtures of cocoyam mixed with tridax procumbens leaf meal on the growth weight, haemoglobin content, serum biochemistry and the carcass evaluation of pigs. The experiment was conducted at the Swine unit of the Teaching and Research Farm, University of Uyo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Cocoyam mixed with tridax procumbens leaf meal were mixed in the ration of 3:1 and allowed to ferment in an air tight environment for six days and after that was sundried. The product was referred to as FCTPLM premix. A total of 40 grower pigs of large white were used for the study. At the end of the trial, two pigs were slaughtered to compare the internal organs such as heart, abdominal fat, spleen etc; to assess the carcass value. The results from the study shows significant (p<0.05) differences on the performance characteristics of weaner pigs, while animals on 16% diet gave the best compared to other diets in final weight gain, feed conversion ratio and protein efficiency ratio (25.67kg, 2.06 and 2.52) respectively. There were significant differences (P>0.05) on the carcass evaluation of the pigs. There were no significant different (P>0.05) found among haemoglobin content, pack cell volume and red blood cells. It was concluded that FCTPM premix could completely replace maize without adversely affecting the overall growth performance of the pigs. Implications and recommendations were made from the findings of the study.

Nature has been a source of medicinal agents for thousands of years and an impressive
numbers of modern drugs have been isolated from natural resources. Tridax
procumbens Linn (Family –Asteraceae common name- Dhaman grass) is a common
herb found in India. Tridax procumbens is well known Ayurvedic, ethino-botanical and
unani medicinal plant. Pharmacological studies have shown that Tridax procumbens
possess properties like anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, wound heal, antimicrobial,
antiseptic, hypotensive and bradycardiac effects. The whole plant was reported to treat
various elements, such as dysentery, diarrhea and preventing hair loss. These
properties are mainly due to many active phytochemicals including the presence of
carbohydrates, proteins, tannins, steroids, alkaloids, dexamethasone, luteoline,
glucolureolin, β--silosterol, flaone, glycoside and quercetin in this plant.

With growing reports of multidrug-resistant pathogens causing untreatable human infections, the need for new antimicrobial therapies is becoming increasingly important. This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial properties of the leaf extracts of Premna odorata Blanco, Petersianthus quadrialatus Merr., Shorea astylosa Foxw., and Tridax procumbens Linn. The medicinal importance of these plants remains understudied despite their abundant distribution and endemism in the Philippines. A disk diffusion assay was utilized to test the antimicrobial properties of T. procumbens leaf extract against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. On the one hand, the fungal colony and spore germination assay was used to test P. odorata, P. quadrialatus, and S. astylosa leaf extracts against Aspergillus niger. Different concentrations of leaf extracts were prepared and compared with positive and negative controls. T. procumbens minimally inhibits the growth of P. aeruginosa (10 mm) and S. aureus (10 mm), while S. astylosa leaf extracts revealed the most significant inhibition on colony growth (5.38 mm) and spore germination (15). P. odorata and P. quadrialatus showed the least (28.35 mm; 82.17) and moderate (10.97 mm; 49.5) inhibitory potentials, respectively. The discovery of new antimicrobial compounds from these plant extracts is seen as a potential resolve to the pressing problem of antimicrobial resistance.
