Abstract: Franciscus Meninski generally used the letter ‹y› as a symbol for today’s Turkish ı. However,
this letter also appears in front vocalic words which contradicts the palato-velar aspect of
Turkish vowel harmony. Mertol Tulum has recently attempted to show that the phonetic
value of ‹y› in front vocalic words was a central, high vowel placed between the Turkish i
and ı (one that would probably be rendered [ɨ] in the IPA; however, since this letter is barely
visible in print, especially in the footnotes, I have decided to replace it with its Fenno-Ugristic
equivalent here). The present author, thus, examines Tulum’s line of reasoning and dicusses
the possibility of reinterpreting the functions fulfilled by ‹y› and ‹ü› in Meninski’s work.

In Turkish, there are certain spelling characteristics for exclusively loanwords, which aren't related to originally Turkish words. One of them is the circumflex (lit. "correction mark") to indicate a long vowel and the soft types of g, k, l consonants before a back vowel in the loanwords. According to the orthography, circumflex isn't used to indicate all the phonems mentioned above, used on a basis of disambiguation, and mispelling is very common. Additionaly, some of the loanwords are sometimes mispronounced due to these loan phonems. In this study we analise the reasons of the mistakes and offer a teaching method to avoid the spelling and pronunciation mistakes. The method offered in this study is to indicate the long vowels and the soft g, k, l before the back vowels in the basic language teaching materials according to standard Turkish pronunciation. Indicating the long vowels and soft g, k, l consonants can help to teach correct pronunciation. Scientific articles and newspaper columns have been scanned for this study in order to represent the general spelling habits regarding to circumflex.

The research was conducted on first, second, third and fourth year students of above mentioned department. For the study some words of a chosen text misspelled by the researcher and the students were asked to correct the words of which they thought misspelled. The research has revealed that some students have serious deficiencies in spelling of some words. It is possible to say that students’ lack of attention, lack of enthusiasm and lack of delicacy and incoherence of spelling of some words among the spelling books might cause this outcome.
