Notes on my going on works (concise) Old Turkic Dictionary and Uyghur Dictionary. - Devam Eden Çalışmalar bağlamında bu yazıda 1989’da çalışmalarına başladığım ve altı yıldır baskıya hazırladığım, hâlen düzeltmeleri ile meşgul olduğum sözlüğümden ve yöntemimden bahsedecek, örnekler vereceğim. Yazıda çalışmanın geçmişi, uygulanan yöntem ve sözlüğümün her maddesinden birer kelimeye yer verilmiştir.

Orta Asya'dan Anadolu'ya gelinceye kadar Türkler, Türk dilli kavimler eski Türk runik yazısından Süryani alfabesine, Arap alfabesinden Soğud kökenli Uygur alfabesine varıncaya kadar çok çeşitli alfabeler kullandılar. Eldeki kitap bu konuda 2007 yılında Eskişehir'de sunulan bildirilerin toplamıdır.

"This is the text of an oral presentation made at the symposium "Altaique ou pas?", organized by Guillaume Jacques and Anton Antonov on 10 Dec 2011 in Paris.Part of this symposium was an invited exchange of ideas on the "Altaic hypothesis" between the undersigned and Martine Robbeets. I left the text by and large as read at the symposium, with minor edits (nor of which reflects anything which was said at the venue), and, thus preserved its character as an oral presentation, including direct addresses to members of the audience ("Martine" and, in most cases, "you" refers to Martine Robbeets, whom I wish to thank again for agreeing to participate in this journée, as of course, again, to its organizers and all participants in the discussion.The first part, "Avant-propos", is a short text which I prepared for distribution before the event. Bibliographical references were kept to a minimum, and it is clear that some statements would require them.The paper is not thoroughly proofread, my apologies for the plethora of typos still contained."

Note, 13. July 2013:
In a recently published paper (Genealogically motivated grammaticalization, in: M. Robbeets/H. Cuyckens (edd.): Shared Grammaticalization, Amsterdam/Philadelphia: Benjamins 2013), M. Robbeets, speaking about the morphological comparanda between he languages in question she presents in several publications of hers, claims (p. 148) that, in this paper, I (St. G.) "have attempted to explain these correspondences in terms of borrowing".
A careful reading of the relevant passages of this paper (towards the end) will reveal to the attentive reader that this is not the case, and that the wording and the line of thought I use here does not lend itself to such an interpretation.


Note 6 July 2020 (sigh)

As of today, the opening remarks on Pallas and Abel-Remusat as "precursors" of something which was *later* to develop into the critique of Altaic as a genealogical (and linguistic) concept came under heavy shelling in some draft on academia.edu. While each and every correction of factual errors contained in this passage (which was also used in a few other public lectures) is of course justified and welcome, but I should add that this *ornamental* introduction is fully aware of the fact (and says so!) that Pallas' early words predate any coherent formulation of the Altaic hypothesis (while I am accused of precisely *not* saying this or, possibly, not even understanding this - there is more which I'm accused of "not mentioning", while I actually *do* mention it). Any careful reading of my passage will quickly reveal that (while everything could still be made and said better and clearer) the recent "criticism" is null and void, since it (I have ample reason to assume, deliberately) misstates content and intent of my words. I am, furthermore, repatedly, not to say constantly, accused of perpetuating a false view on Abel-Rémusat's position  and, an unforgivable sin, not to cite some paper from 1996 in which the record allegedly was set straight on this one. The author of these allegations should still remeber that he, in 2016, received a quite verbose private message from me, which states my reasons for viewing his opinions on Abel-Rémusat as insufficient and *not* dictating to cease repeating what I repeat here, to which the only answer I ever received was a kind of grunt (I am still in the possession of this exchange).

The Tuñuquq inscriptions are an invaluable treasure in literary and historical terms. The inscriptions were discovered in 1897 by Y. N. Klements. Two years after this discovery, Radloff (1899) published the first scholarly edition of the inscriptions. They were read again and interpreted by many philologists after the first edition. The sentence in the thirteenth line of the inscriptions are problematic in terms of meaning and reading. Although various interpretations have been made about the sentence so far, a certain solution has not been found yet. The article will propose a new reading and interpretation of the sentence.

If we talk about inscriptions from Turkes, mostly remembered Kül Tégin, Bilge Qaghan and Tunyukuk Inscriptions. But there is Bugut, Khüis Tolgoi and Mongolküre Inscriptions too. In this article briefly  those inscriptions dealed according to Y. Yutaka, D. Maue, A. Vovin, Etienne de la Vaissière, Takashi Osawa // Türkçe en eski belgeler, yazıtlar dendiğinde akla ilk gelenler Kül Tegin ve Bilge Kağan yazıtlarıdır. Moğolistan’da Orhon ırmağına yakın bir mevkide (yaklaşık 30 km. mesafede) bulunan bu yazıtlar ile birlikte akla gelen öteki yazıt ise Tunyukuk yazıtıdır. Ancak bu yazıtlar Türkçe olup tamamı 8. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğine uzanırlar. Peki Türklere ait başka yazılı belge var mıdır? Evet, ilk Türk kağanlığından kalma kimisi Soğudca kimisi de Moğolca  yazıtlar var olup bunlar 6. yüzyılın sonu ile 7. yüzyılın başlarına uzanmaktadırlar. Özellikle Moğolca olanlar ise çok yakın zamanda çözülmüş olup benim de içinde bulunduğum bir araştırma grubunun çalışmalarıyla bilim dünyasına duyurulmuştur.

A comparison of the core reconstructed vocabulary of proto-Turkic, proto-Mongol and proto-Tungus was made. The number of matches falls within the false positives range. The three linguistic families do not have a common vocabulary.
A critical assessment of the Altaic Etymological Dictionary by Sergei Starostin is offered.

yazarın Washington Üniversitesi, New York Colombiya Üniversitesi’nde Altay
dilleri dilbilimi üzerinde çeşitli zamanlarda verdiği derslerin içeriğini
sunmaktadır. Bu kitabın yazım sürecinde yazar, Harvard Üniversitesi’nden,
yararlı önerilerde bulunan ve bibliyografik destek sağlayan arkadaşı Omelian
Pritsak’ın yardımını almıştır. Aynı şekilde, Kore dilinin tarihi hakkında bazı
bilgileri de Seul Üniversitesi’nden Profesör Ki-Moon Lee’ye borçludur. Kore dili
dilbilimi hakkında bazı bibliyografik bilgiler ise Yale Üniversitesi’nden Profesör
Johannes Rahder’den elde edilmiştir. Yazar, adı geçen meslektaşlarına içten
teşekkürlerini ifade etmekten mutluluk duymaktadır. Bu kitapta bulunabilecek

Bu çalışmada, Çuvaşça yum sözcüğü tarihî ve çağdaş Türk dilleri ile birlikte incelenerek sözcüğün kavram ve anlam alanları değerlendirilmiştir. Daha önce aynı sözcük hakkında yapılan etimoloji çalışmaları değerlendirilip sözcüğün kökeni hakkında bilgi verilmiştir.

In this study, the Chuvash "yum" word is evaluated diachronically and the meanings and the forms of the word, in historical and modern Turkic languages are determined. Studies about the etymology of the word are determined and a proposal of etymology is presented.

This article is in no way a serious scientific study. This is a more comic publication. Its goal is to show the true complexity of the problem of reading the runiform writing monuments from the territory of Eastern Europe, showing based several examples that with a great desire of the researcher it is possible to select absolutely any language for translation and draw any argument based on the fact that the material studied is unrepresentative, as well as, of course, researcher’s own erudition and fantasy / Данная статья ни в коей мере не является серьезным научным исследованием. Это больше шуточная публикация. Ее цель — продемонстрировать истинную сложность проблемы прочтения памятников рунической письменности с территории Восточной Европы, на нескольких примерах показав, что при большом желании исследователя можно подобрать совершенно любой язык для перевода и притянуть любую аргументацию.

Özet: Lambdasizm / sigmasizm konusu gerek Türk lehçeleri arasında, gerekse Türkçeyle akraba olan diğer diller arasında tanıklanan örneklerden ortaya çıkmış problemlerdir. İçinde /l/ ünsüzü bulunan bazı kelimelerin bir başka dilde ya da lehçede /ş/’li olarak görülmesi, probleme sebep olan soruyu sor-durmuştur: Hangisi daha arkaiktir?
İlk olarak W. Schoot’un ortaya koyduğu bu problem hakkında Radloff, Gombocz, Németh, Benzing, Cla-uson, Meyer, Róna-Tas, Nauta, Scherner, Adamović, Ramstedt, Poppe, Räsänen, Menges, Pritsak, Te-nişev, Miller, T. Tekin, Setälä, Şçerbak, Bouda, Johanson, Serebrennikov, Ceylan, Yılmaz, Ersoy gibi bi-lim adamlarının çalışmaları bulunmaktadır.
Şimdiye kadar gerek eser, gerek dönem, gerek lehçe, gerekse dil esaslı yapılan lambdasizm / sigmatizm çalışmaları; temelde kelime listelerinden oluşmaktadır. Bu listelerde çoğu zaman bir kelimenin bir dil ya da lehçede /l/ sesiyle, bir başka dil ya da lehçede ise /ş/ sesiyle kullanılan şekilleri gösterilmekte olup bazı örnekler aynı lehçe ya da dil içinde de bulunabilmekte, bazıları da çeşitli delillere dayanarak farazî olabilmektedir. Bu çalışmada Derleme Sözlüğü’nden hareketle tespit edilen ve lambdasizm / sigmatizm örnekleri olarak gösterilebilecek olan kelime listeleri esasında; inceleme, değerlendirme ve sınıflandırmalar yapılacak; böylelikle de lambdasizm / sigmatizm meselesinin Türkiye Türkçesi ağız-ları arasında da örneklerinin bulunabildiği gösterilmiş olacaktır.

Abstract: Lambdacism/sigmatism is a phenomenon which appears in Turkic languages as well as in other languages which are relatives of Turkic. That some words involving /l/ are seen in another dia-lect or language with /ş/ arises the question: Which one of them is more archaic?
The phenomenon first was introduced by W. Schoot has been dealt with by Radloff, Gombocz, Németh, Benzing, Clauson, Meyer, Róna-Tas, Nauta, Scherner, Adamović, Ramstedt, Poppe, Räsänen, Menges, Pritsak, Tenişev, Miller, T. Tekin, Setälä, Şçerbak, Bouda, Johanson, Serebrennikov, Ceylan, Yılmaz, Ersoy.
Studies on the phenomenon based on a text, a period, a dialect or a language have essentially been word lists. In these lists, have been indicated comparison of lexemes of which is with /l/ and with /ş/ in a di-alect or language. Some of those examples might be in a dialect or in a language, whereas others, de-pending on evidents, might be hypotetic.
Depending on the words compiled from Derleme Sözlüğü as examples which can be regarded of lamb-dacism/sigmatism, this paper comprises examination, assessment and classification on the material, thus it will be presented that the dialects of Turkish also have examples of the phenomenon.

Аннотация: Тема ламбдаизм/сигматизм, проблема возникшая в результате приведенных примеров как из тюркских диалектов, так и из родственных языков тюркских языков. Примеры слов, где буква /л/ на другом языке или же на другом диалекте употребляется в форме /ш/ породил вопрос: Какая из них архаичнее?
Об этой задаче выдвинутой В. Шутсом сделана много работ такими исследователями как Радлов, Гомбодж, Немет, Бензинг, Клосон, Мейер, Рона-Тас, Наута, Шернер, Адамович, Рамсдет, Поппе, Рясянен, Менгес, Прицак, Тенишев, Миллер, Текин, Сетала, Щербак, Боуда, Йохансон, Серебренников, Жейлан, Йылмаз, Эрсой и т.д. Исследования сделанные на эту тему на основании произведения, времени, языка и т.д. в основном состоит из списка слов. Этот список в большинстве случаев состоит из примеров слов с буквой /л/ и /ш/ отдельных языков или же диалектов, некоторые примеры взяты из одного и того же диалекта или же языка, а некоторые из них бывают совсем гипотетическими. В данной статье расскрывается тема ламбдаизм/сигматизм на основании списка слов выделенных из диалектного словаря турецкого языка, таким образом будет доказана что и в турецком языке имеются следы ламбдаизма/сигматизма.
