ABSTRACT: Pdf copy of a power point presentation summarizing selected aspects on the past cultures/societies of Zimbabwe and adjacent regions, with text and images, and accompanying an in-class, video/dvd viewing of Time Life's: "Africa: A History Denied" (also available online via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InkYI9Bvua8 [51 minutes]).  Both the video/dvd viewing and power point presentation form the main sources from which students are asked to extract answers/data regarding 12 culture response questions on (1) early searchers, (2) the nature of the evidence, (3) more recent survey and excavation projects, (4) dating methods and chronology, (5) social organization, (6) the associated environment, (7) subsistence and diet, (8) technology, (9) trade and exchange, (10) cognitive archaeology, art, and religion, (11) bioarchaeology, and (12) why and how did things change.  These response questions/topics follow and reinforce readings in the first 12 chapters of the course textbook, Renfrew and Bahn, 2016.  Archaeology: Theories, Methods, and Practices (6th edition).  UPDATED May 2023.

Quelques considérations générales sur les coffrets à shabtis/oushebtis, suivies de la présentation de quelques coffrets et éléments de coffrets conservés dans des collections genevoises (Musée d’art et d’histoire de la Ville de Genève et Fondation Gandur pour l’Art). On y relève les noms de Meripet et du prêtre d’Amon Amenemheb/Pahemnetjer, également connu par une figurine conservée au Vatican (Nouvel Empire), et ceux du prêtre de Montou Horsaiset et de Hahaty, ainsi qu’une paroi anonyme (Troisième Période intermédiaire).

Publication of five ushabtis stored in the Museo Archeologico di Udine. With the exception of one of them, which dates to the New Kingdom, the others date to the Late Period. The contribution of this study concerns the onomastic thanks to some names seldom attested. Moreover the comparison with some material discovered during excavations allows to replace this material in his archaeological context.

In ancient Egypt, the dead needed many faculties for restarting his new life in the Hereafter: breathing, seeing, walking…and virility.
Sex was an essential aspect for the resurrection and in the funerary rites some ritual practices were full of sexual symbolism.
In this line I would like to focus on the ushabti of Pay (from his tomb in Saqqara), dating from the Dynasty XVIII and exposed in the Louvre Museum (N2657).

Quelques réflexions sur les figurines funéraires (shabtis et oushebtis) et le texte du chapitre VI du Livre des Morts. Les commentaires portent sur:
- Les formules « Je suis l’Osiris N » et « moi, je suis toi » utilisées parfois au Nouvel Empire et à la Troisième Période intermédiaire, qui semblent montrer que, dans ces cas, les figurines sont toujours perçues comme des substituts du défunt.
- Une remise en cause de la légende qui ferait des oushebtis l’origine de la fable de l’Apprenti sorcier, en raison de ruptures chronologiques.
- Une proposition d’interpréter la formule initiale (sehedj = ~ illumination) comme un marqueur temporel incitant la statuette à se mettre à l’ouvrage au commencement d’un jour nouveau.
- Une remarque sur le « transport du sable d’est en ouest et réciproquement », compris comme l’expression d’une tâche conduite jusqu’à l’absurde, comparable aux mythes de Sisyphe ou du tonneau des Danaïdes.

Catalogue describing the shabtis of HORUDJA Son of Khau-Si-en-Hap. The shabtis for this owner feature an unique element where the name of the owner is written at various, seemingly random places within the text of chapter six of the book of the death. What could be the reason for it?
