War Monuments

The proposed paper offers a preliminary comparative study of the construction and afterlife of four war memorials that were erected, or initiated at least, by different Belgian war veterans’ associations, reflecting different nationalisms that had slumbered in the trenches of the Belgian front of the First World War. The Belgenmonument in Amersfoort in the Netherlands was built as a job-creating and learning project for interned Belgian soldiers in the Netherlands towards the end of the war. It wanted to express the gratitude of the Belgian nation towards the Dutch people for taking in refugees during the war, but became subject to a diplomatic  riot between both nations after the Armistice and was not inaugurated before 1938. The IJzertoren memorial (1925-1930) in Dixmude, a crowdfunded private memorial constructed by Flemish nationalist veterans, evolved into an ambiguous and divisive symbol already during its construction process, and reflected growing tensions between regionalist and belgicist factions in the interwar years. It’s entanglement with collaborationism during the Second World War ultimately lead to its destruction in 1946, and its reconstruction between 1952-1965. The Albert I gedenkteken (1938) in Nieuport, initiated by the National Belgian Veterans Association, was heralded as Belgium’s official memorial but never came close to fulfilling that role. Finally, the Mémorial Interallié (1925-1938) in Liège-Cointe was to represent international solidarity and reconciliation between all former belligerents, but failed to include the defeated nations and instead developed into a memorial of the victorious. It was erected on a symbolic location by diverse international veterans associations. Looking into neutrality, regionalism, nationalism, and internationalism, a quick-scan of these four memorials illustrates the diversified political landscape of the interwar years that had emerged in circles of war veterans, and hints towards the divisive nature of post-war commemoration, which would resonate until deep into 20th-century society. Furthermore, this study unveils the until now underexposed agency of war veteran associations within the material and memorial culture of the First Word War.

Podizanje spomen-kosturnice na Ceru organizovao je i sproveo šabački pododbor Udruženja rezervnih oficira i ratnika. Građena je tokom 1927. i 1928. godine, a svečano osvećena i otkrivena 28. juna 1928. godine. Podignuta je da bi se u nju pohranile kosti vojnika stradalih tokom Cerske bitke, vođene u avgustu 1914. godine. Prilikom gradnje u kosturnicu je smešteno 3042 posmrtna ostatka srpskih i austrougarskih vojnika stradalih i sahranjenih na delovima teritorije Jadranskog i Pocerskog sreza tokom Prvog svetskog rata. Svi ekshumirani i prenešeni vojnici vode se kao nepoznati, ali je ostalo sačuvano 128 imena stradalih srpskih vojnika, koji su najverovatnije pohranjeni u kosturnicu ispod spomenika u cerskom selu Tekerišu. Prenosimo njihova imena, kao i nekoliko detalja vezanih za podizanje spomen-kosturnice i uređenje prostora oko nje.

In this article, an overview of research toward materialized or monumental
memory of the Great PatrioticWar in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia is provided. In particular, this text will focus on official monuments and memorials dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, as it was known in the USSR and continues to be known in Russia, only briefly addressing the subject of local and individual memory.

This article aims at exploring the post-war fate of pre-war commemorative sites and monuments in Japan, an important matter that is connected to some very sensitive religious and cultural problems, starting with the ongoing discussions about the Yasukuni Shrine.

U radu su analizirane razglednice i fotografije koje se čuvaju u zbirkama Zavičajnog muzeja u Jagodini, Narodnog muzeja u Kragujevcu i Muzeja grada Beograda na kojima se kao motiv pojavljuje crkva Svetog arhangela Mihaila u Jagodini, kako sama građevina, tako i njeno neposredno okruženje (porta i spomenik u porti). Analizirana građa je nastala u periodu od poslednje četvrtine XIX veka do Drugog svetskog rata.

Dans cet article, nous nous intéresserons au destin particulier du "Monument
aux Morts d’Alger" de Paul Landowski. Construit pour célébrer la mémoire des
soldats algérois disparus sur le front de la Première Guerre mondiale, il fut
recouvert après l’indépendance de l’Algérie par l’artiste M’hamed Issiakhem.
Cet exemple unique de repurposing (« reconversion ») a depuis fait l’objet
d’une installation documentaire de la part de l’artiste Amina Menia. Cette
oeuvre palimpseste constitue donc un paradigme à partir duquel il est possible
de démêler les fils de la trame qui symbolise l’histoire complexe des rapports
franco-algériens. En prenant le parti d’une perspective à la fois transhistorique
et transculturelle, il s’agira donc d’analyser les enjeux mémoriels que le
Monument aux Morts révèle dans les différents contextes où s’opère la fabrique
de l’histoire nationale (Nora, 1986 ; Çelik, 2002 ;Alcaraz, 2017). Nous verrons
comment ce monument devient le lieu où se matérialise des stratégies
politiques successives au coeur desquelles la guerre joue un rôle régénérateur
de l’identité collective.

In this article, we will focus on the fortune of the "Monument
to the deaths of Algiers" by Paul Landowski. Built to celebrate the memory of
Algerian soldiers killed during World War I, he was
covered after the independence of Algeria by the artist M'hamed Issiakhem.
This unique example of repurposing has since been subject to
a documentary installation by the artist Amina Menia. This
palimpsestic piece of work therefore constitutes a paradigm from which it is possible
to unravel the threads weft that symbolizes the complex story of French-Algerian relationships. By taking advantage of a perspective that is both transhistorical
transcultural, we will analyze the memorial stakes that the "Monument to the Dead" reveals in the different contexts of national history (Nora 1986, Çelik 2002, Alcaraz 2017). We will see how this monument becomes the strategic place where successive policies are materialized and in which war plays a regenerating role of collective identity.

Seit der Einrichtung der „Gedächtnisstätte“ für die im Weltkrieg gefallenen deutschen Soldaten im Jahr 1931 ist die Schinkelsche Neue Wache in Berlin ein zentraler Ort staatlicher Gedenkkultur. In den letzten Jahren der Weimarer Demokratie noch ein unentschieden zwischen Mystifizierung soldatischen Sterbens, nationalem Gedenken und abstrakter Trauer positioniertes Denkmal, wurde das Gebäude nur wenige Jahre später als faktisches „Reichsehrenmal“ zu einem bedeutenden Schauplatz des nationalsozialistischen Frontsoldatenkults. Die von Heinrich Tessenow 1930 für die „Gedächtnisstätte“ entworfene Innenraumgestaltung - ein dunkler Raum mit einem Boden aus Basaltpflastersteinen mit Bleifugen, in seinem Zentrum ein mächtiger schwarzer, von einem bronzenem Eichenkranz bekrönter Basaltblock - stand der neuen Nutzung nicht entgegen, ja sie erwies sich sogar als besonders passend.
Die schweren Bombenschäden des Zweiten Weltkrieges sorgten für eine eindrucksvolle Neukontextualisierung des Mahnmals: Der Bau in Trümmern, der Basaltblock geborsten, der Eichenkranz verschwunden, das Dach offen - deutlicher war das Scheitern des deutschen Soldatentums kaum zu bebildern. 1960 wurde die Neue Wache nach Instandsetzungsarbeiten am Gebäude als „Mahnmal für die Opfer des Faschismus und Militarismus“ wiedereröffnet. Bereits 1969 erfolgte im Zusammenhang mit dem 20. Jahrestag der Gründung der DDR eine komplette Neugestaltung, die ästhetisch wie politisch mit der rein national orientierten und revanchistischen Tradition des Ehrenmals radikal brach. Ein Architekt*innenkollektiv unter Leitung von Lothar Kwasnitza schuf unter Bezugnahme auf Mies van der Rohes Wettbewerbsbeitrag von 1930 ein modernes Mahnmal, dessen Zentrum kein schwarzer, aus Feuer geborener, nordischer Stein sondern ein von grünen Marmorplatten umgebenes gläsernes Prisma mit einer „lebendigen Flamme“ (Kwasnitza) bildete. Vor dem Glaskörper wurden in Erde von verschiedenen Schauplätzen des Weltkrieges und aus Konzentrations- und Vernichtsungslagern die sterblichen Reste eines „unbekannten Widerstandskämpfers“ und eines „unbekannten Soldaten“ bestattet.
Anfang der 1990er Jahre plädierte die Berliner Denkmalpflege dafür, die Kwasnitza-Ausstattung von 1969 nicht zu zerstören, doch schon 1993 musste sie einer unentschiedenen Rekonstruktion der Tessenowschen Raumgestaltung weichen, in deren Mitte auf Anweisung Helmut Kohls eine vergrößerte Replik einer Käthe Kollwitz-Plastik aufgestellt wurde. Statt an deutsche Geschichte und deutsche Verantwortung wurde nun in dem in „Zentrale Gedenkstätte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland für die Opfer von Krieg und Gewaltherrschaft“ umbenannten Bau an das deutsche ‚Schicksal’ erinnert. Die Rückkehr zum Tessenowschen Steinmaterial und die Aufstellung einer in mehrfacher Hinsicht falschen Käthe Kollwitz-Plastik ist adäquater Ausdruck der Geschichtspolitik der späten Kohl-Ära.
