White Mensural Notation

Complete transcription and reconstruction of the canon a13 for Christ and his Twelve Disciples on the Apostles Creed. This piece is found in both the Eton Choirbook and the Baldwin Manuscript. This edition contained both the fully realized canon as well as a modern reconstruction of the original monophonic version of the canon, as found in the manuscripts.

This is a threefold transcription of Baude Cordier's "circle canon," two versions in rondeau form and one in perpetual canon. Included with the music transcriptions are full translations from Medieval French to English of all the accompanying texts as well as an English text underlay for the music.

Also included is a full explanation of the various mensurations and colorations that appear in the piece.

The design of the scores attempts to illustrate the rondeau form overlaying the canonic conceit.

Only the incipit "Gaudeamus omnes in domino" appears with Agricola's music. The Introit text set to the chant cantus firmus used in this transcription is the text for the Introit for the Feast of the Assumption (also Gaudeamus omnes in domino).

Furthermore, Agricola only set down as semibreves each of the first 38 notes of the "Gaudeamus omnes in domino" chant. This transcription, following the example of Edward Learner's edition, reconstructs the remaining tenor notes. This edition differs from Learner's in that it uses the Introit chant for Assumption from Cambrai, Bibliotheque Municipale [F-CA], MS B-12, fol. 49r-v (c. 1500), rather than a British version from the Sarum rite.

15th- and 16th-century mensural notation raises many debates and questions among musicologists and modern performers. The contradictory teachings found in the vast body of theory from the Renaissance can be addressed through a better understanding of the treaties’ roles as well as the highlighting of the mechanisms that turn a descriptive system in a set of prescriptive and self-referential rules disconnected from musical practice: the cult of authority, a wish for symmetry and a taste for completeness. Meanwhile, the exploration of the links between tactus and counterpoint makes it possible to define the active time window in which the management of dissonances becomes a dynamic process. The sliding cursor where the Notenbild is scrolled allows for an internal examination of the music that clarifies most of the ambiguities regarding choice of tempo while avoiding the pitfalls of theoretical contradictions.

La notation mensuraliste des XVe et XVIe siècles suscite débats et interrogations parmi les musicologues et les interprètes modernes. Face aux enseignements contradictoires du vaste corpus théorique de la Renaissance, il convient de mieux saisir le rôle de ces traités, mais également de mettre en évidence les mécanismes qui transforment un système descriptif en un ensemble de règles prescriptives auto-référentes déconnectées de la pratique musicale : culte de l’autorité, volonté de symétrie et goût pour la complétude. En parallèle, l’exploration des liens entre tactus et contrepoint permet de qualifier la fenêtre temporelle active à l’intérieur de laquelle la gestion des dissonances devient un processus dynamique. Ce curseur dans lequel défile le Notenbild rend possible un examen interne de la musique qui lève la plupart des ambiguïtés relatives au choix du tempo, tout en évitant l’écueil des contradictions théoriques.

Director del taller “Taller vocal de interpretación de música barroca: las Vísperas de Monteverdi desde las fuentes originales”, (Universidad Internacional de Andalucía, campus “Antonio Mahado” de Baeza, del 3 al 5 de diciembre de 2018), junto con Fernando Pérez Valera (Universidad de Alicante).
El presente taller, de carácter teórico-práctico, se centrará en el estudio y montaje, desde una perspectiva históricamente informada, de una de las obras más emblemáticas de la historia de la música universal: las Vísperas de la Virgen (1610) de Claudio Monteverdi. Se trata de un taller experimental en el que se recreará el método de trabajo de una capilla vocal de principios del siglo XVII, leyendo las Vísperas a partir de la notación original contenida en los libretes impresos de 1610. Por otro lado, la sección de canto llano que complementa el oficio de Vísperas (antífonas a los salmos) también se estudiará y se trabajará sobre fuentes contemporáneas italianas o españolas. Ello implica, en primer lugar, experimentar el solfeo histórico (solmisación), entre otros aspectos de la práctica interpretativa histórica, atendiendo a los tratados de teoría musical de ese periodo, además de a las propias fuentes musicales originales. Entre otros, se prestará especial atención a los siguientes temas:
1. Aspectos generales de interpretación a partir de fuentes originales:
- Solmisación. El hexacordo y las mutaciones. La mano guidoniana y el gamut.
- Notación mensural: figuras y pausas. El tactus. Figuras con punto y síncopas; figuras ligadas. El color. Proporción tripla y sesquialtera
- Contrapunto, texturas, cánones y cláusulas.
- Música ficta: ajuste intervalos perfectos armónicos y melódicos; fórmulas cadenciales.
- Conceptos de ornamentación y su puesta en práctica, tanto en el canto llano como en la polifonía, de acuerdo con los criterios estéticos del momento y a partir de las referencias que se encuentran en tratados de la época.

2. Aspectos performativos de las Vísperas de Monteverdi:
- Reconstrucción de las antífonas de canto llano que acompañan a los salmos
- Estructura general de la parte polifónica: obras basadas en cantus firmus y obras libremente compuestas. 
- Estilos de canto: obras para solistas y a varios coros.
- Cuestiones de ornamentación e improvisación. 
- Otras dimensiones interpretativas: pronunciación, tempo, transportes y afinación.

Puesto que el taller es principalmente práctico, se dirige fundamentalmente a músicos (cantantes, directores de coro, musicólogos especializados en música antigua) interesados en acercarse a este repertorio desde una nueva perspectiva.

Le système mensuraliste, né de la nécessité de synchroniser le contrepoint des xve et xvie siècles, s'appuie sur deux notions distinctes : le tactus et les proportions. Le sens de ces deux variables évolue selon la période et l'espace géographique envisagés. Deux démarches antinomiques caractérisent les travaux des spécialistes du domaine : appliquer le sens théorique des signes au corpus musical, ou alors déduire la signification des signes du contexte musical et de l'étude des sources.
Si cette dernière démarche a obtenu certains résultats probants, il ne faut toutefois pas négliger les écrits théoriques, mais bien plutôt les examiner sous un nouvel angle. Chaque traité s'inscrit dans une tradition précise, qu'il convient de mettre en évidence. Évaluer la pertinence d'une source tient donc à mesurer la distance qui la sépare de la pratique contemporaine.

Quatre cas de transmission seront abordés : transmission d’une idée de maître à disciple (équivalence au niveau du tempus), emprunts d’exemples musicaux théoriques (avec ou sans modifications, avec ou sans citation), interprétations divergentes d’une même source pratique (le cas de la Missa prolationum de Ockeghem), et finalement le parcours d’un exemple théorique unique à travers les différentes éditions d'écrits de six auteurs : Listenius, Heyden, Finck, Oridryus, Wilflingseder et Lossius.
Par l’examen minutieux des différents traités et de leurs rééditions, il sera ainsi possible de situer un auteur ou un manuel dans le vaste imbroglio de la théorie mensuraliste du xvie siècle, en fonction de son adéquation avec la pratique musicale ou de son allégeance aveugle aux vieilles autorités. Entre ces deux bornes extrêmes, de multiples positions intermédiaires sont possibles. Dresser une « généalogie mensuraliste » devrait permettre de réhabiliter le corpus théorique dans sa confrontation aux sources musicales, par une contextualisation accrue.

The choirbook, from which fragments are preserved in the Bratislava City
Archive, quite probably dated from about 1550. The fragments show a
polyphonic repertoire with the form of open double folios. They were later
exploited as covers of municipal official books from 1687–1700. Today,
some of the fragments are stored in the Bratislava State Archive, in the
Zbierka cirkevných písomnosti [Collection of ecclesiastical documents];
but surprisingly, further fragments can still be found today on the
municipal books from the 17th century in the Bratislava City Archive. The
following material describes the discovered polyphonic fragments and the
historical circumstances regarding the origin, sale, and secondary use of
the choirbook.
Pravděpodobně z doby okolo roku 1550 pocházel rukopisný chorbuch, jehož fragmenty pochází z Archívu mesta Bratislavy. Fragmenty s polyfonním repertoárem v podobě otevřených dvojlistů sloužily původně jako obal městských úředních knih z doby mezi roky 1687–1700. Část fragmentů je dnes uložena ve Štátném archívu v Bratislave ve fondu Zbierka cirkevných písomnosti; druhá část fragmentů se překvapivě dodnes nachází na městských knihách ze 17. století v Archívu mesta Bratislavy. V následující studii budou představeny a detailně popsány objevené polyfonní fragmenty, stejně tak budou popsány dobové souvislosti týkající se původu, prodeje a následného druhotného využití tohoto chorbuchu.
