Women in Design

In 2002 the first design related program patch started at the University of Bahrain with a group of 17
students enrolled in the BSc. of Interior Design Program. Since their graduation in 2007 many groups
followed. A decade after the first group graduation the design profession market has changed and so
did the education field linked to this profession. This research aims at reviewing the existing research on
education and academic career patterns for the majority of women enrolled in the interior design program
to enhance this profession and sustain women in this field. Moreover, the research paper gives an overview
of a qualitative study done by semi-structured interviews targeting 58 out of 275 female interior design
graduates from the year 2007- 2017. The study investigates the social, cultural and professional challenges
that faced 22 female graduates of The Interior Design Program and their current role in either the design or
the educational profession in the field. The results also shows a thematic graphical analysis of their current
profession trajectories. The primary research results are then compared to secondary data of two ad hoc
committee comments of students and professionals undertaken in 2017 along with an online survey result
answered by more than 69 graduates. This study is of high importance as it is pioneering in documenting
and predicting graduates’ competitiveness and sustainability in the design profession. This complies with
Bahrain economic vision of 2030, that requires investigations and investments in non-oil sectors, as design
might be the way forward.

“D” come design, ma anche come donna: designer, artiste, artigiane e imprenditrici hanno avuto un ruolo chiave nella ricca e densa storia del design italiano dal dopoguerra ai nostri giorni, stando al centro della scena come dietro le quinte. Negli anni in cui la cultura del progetto si stava affermando, l’apporto dell’universo femminile è stato essenziale sotto il profilo della creatività e dell’innovazione. Donne che si sono distinte nei settori più diversi, indicando nuove possibili strade: non solo disegno industriale e grafica, ma editoria, formazione, imprenditoria, fino al mondo delle tecnologie informatico-digitali. Progettiste che hanno saputo fare la differenza, lavorando attivamente in studi di progettazione, nelle redazioni e all’interno delle università.
La ricognizione sulle loro carriere ne sancisce autorialità e protagonismo, riconoscendone il coraggio di scelte spesso difficili e controcorrente. Attraverso il racconto delle loro vicende viene arricchita e completata la storia del design novecentesco, con nuove prospettive nei modi di leggere il ruolo della donna ieri come oggi.
La componente femminile, con la doppia caratterizzazione incarnata dalle due eroine ariostesche – Angelica e Bradamente – emerge potente nel campo del design, una disciplina che parla il linguaggio universale della creatività, capace di spostare lo sguardo dal maschile al femminile e viceversa.

Osmanlı’dan Cumhuriyet’e geçiş döneminde yetişen Sabiha Bozcalı, 1938-1975 yılları arasında; ilan, afiş, takvim, ambalaj, etiket, fuar panosu, kitap resimlemesi ve illüstrasyon yaptı. Kültür-sanat dünyasında ve yaratıcı endüstride kadınlara yönelik önyargıları aşarak geçirdiği onlarca yılın ardından gazetecilikten emekli oldu. Basın-yayın alanında çizgisiyle en uzun süre varlık gösteren ilk kadındı.

Bozcalı, “Türkiye’nin ilk kadın illüstratörü” olduğunu belirtmesine rağmen literatüre giremedi. Bu araştırma, “Ressam Sabiha Rüştü Bozcalı” sergisinin ışığında, Bozcalı’nın reklama, tanıtıma ve illüstrasyona yönelik üretimlerini değerlendirerek görsel kültür tarihinde sanatçı için yeni bir sayfa açmaktadır. Bozcalı’nın öncü çalışmalarını, yaratıcı endüstrinin gelişimini belirleyen dinamikler üzerinden irdelemekte, Bozcalı’yı grafik tasarım tarihi içinde konumlandırmaktadır.

It would be nice to think that we no longer needed to isolate women’s achievements. But gender equality has not progressed as far as many women and men would have hoped and Women Design deserves to be an exhaustive tome. Instead author Libby Sellers, a celebrated design curator, makes her point precisely through profiles of 21 creative females.

Bir süredir, kadın grafik tasarımcıların tarihiyle ilgili bir araştırma yürütüyorum. Kadınların tarihyazımında neden unutulduklarını anlamaya çalışıyorum. Bu dosyadan özel bir ismi —araştırma notu olarak— Manifold’da paylaşıyorum: Gülümser Aral Üretmen, 1950’lerin erkek egemen reklam/tanıtım dünyasında başarı gösteren sayılı kadın grafik tasarımcılardan olmasına rağmen, tarihte anılmıyor. Üretmen’in kariyerini incelemek, kadınların grafik tasarım tarihindeki yerlerini anlamak için bir adım olabilir.

Graphic designers are generally invisible as the authors of their own work. A deliberate effort must be made in order for them to be seen and acknowledged. The collaborative nature of design, associations with clients, and the involvement of production teams further hinders an individual graphic designer’s visible authorship. However, gender also has a major influence on the invisibility of women in the history of this industry. Historically, the most celebrated practising graphic designers in Australia have been men, as evidenced by their overwhelming presence in books and on Hall of Fame platforms. My research has explored and addressed the key processes that cause this gendered inequity, including the representation and understanding of the name ‘graphic design’, the biases in historical narratives, and the disparate understandings of ‘success’ and ‘significant contributions’.
