Sustainability is a term used frequently in this age of increasing environmental awareness and concern, and living sustainably is something that people are actively beginning to embrace and adopt into their lifestyles. National Parks often have sustainability at the core of their operations and aims, and there are no current studies looking at how this environmental rhetoric and the policies that come with it affect settlements within the boundaries of the park. This report identifies a traditional rural village inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park (Grassington) and a rural village outside the park boundary about 20 miles away (Leyburn) to compare with; these locations were chosen as they were a similar size in the 1950s when the National Park was designated.
This 2000 publication is the Interim Report on 1999 fieldwork in the Yorkshire Dales National Park by the Yorkshire Dales Hunter Gatherer Research Project, University of Bradford. A full abstract is found in the report.
