Maxillary sinusitis was studied as an indicator of poor air quality. Seven skeletal samples were examined from North America, England, and Nubia, and selected to represent different geographic locations, environments, and subsistence economies. Frequency rates varied from 17.2 to 51.5% of individuals affected with one or both sinuses preserved. Hardin Village had the highest frequency (51.5%), followed by the Aleuts (42.9%), “Illinois” (38.6%), Indian Knoll (38.5%), Kulubnarti (21.8%), Christchurch, Spitalfields (18.0%), and “South Dakota” (17.2%). Male frequencies ranged from 16.7 to 36.7%, but the female frequency ranged more widely from 18.0 to 76.5%. At most sites female rates exceeded male. The effect of urban and rural environment on sinusitis occurrence, and also subsistence economy, biological sex, and social status were explored, and comparative sites also considered; urban agricultural sites had a mean frequency of 48.5%, rural agricultural sites had a mean frequency of 45.0%, and hunter-gatherer sites had a mean frequency of 40.0%. In the urban sites male and female frequencies were near equal, but in the rural agricultural and hunter-gatherer sites female frequencies exceeded male frequencies. Dental disease was not found to have much impact on sinusitis frequency. The importance of the link between poor air quality and respiratory health is highlighted in clinical studies in both developed and developing countries, but also in bioarcheological studies. Common indications for cheek tooth extraction in the horse include dental fracture, periodontal disease, severe decay/ caries, mandibular fracture with alveolar/tooth involvement, and periapical abscess. Complications secondary to extraction of cheek teeth are prevalent. Typical complications may include retained root tip(s), collateral damage of neighboring teeth and alveolar bone, mandibular fracture non-union or delayed union, cemental ankylosis, dilacerated root(s), oroantral/oronasal fistula, palatal deviation of cheek teeth, bone sequestration, sinus involvement, alveolar plug failure, and palatine artery laceration. This paper presents a series of cases that had complications following cheek tooth extraction. Anticipation of problematic extractions, recognition of complications, and appropriate treatment will aid the clinician in managing the inevitable cheek tooth extraction complication.

To report retrospectively on the 5-year follow-up results of the rehabilitation of complete edentulous atrophied maxillae, using extra-maxillary zygomatic implants alone or in combination with conventional implants. This retrospective report includes an initial cohort of 39 patients (30 women and 9 men), with a mean age of 53 years, followed for 5 years. The patients were rehabilitated with 39 fixed prostheses and 169 implants (92 zygomatic implants inserted extra-maxillary and 77 conventional dental implants). A provisional prosthesis was manufactured and attached via multiunit abutments secured to the implants on the same day as implant placement. The aim of the present study was to estimate average age of the patients in both sexes treated for MS, distribution by sex, amount of dexter and sinister MS with and without the fistulas into the maxillary sinus, with and without the foreign-bodies, length of stay in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at Kaunas Hospital of University of Medicine during the period from 1999 till 2004. In the paper we are introducing guidelines and suggestions for use of 3D image processing SW in head pathology diagnostic and procedures for obtaining physical medical model by additive manufacturing/rapid prototyping techniques, bearing in mind the improvement of surgery performance, its maximum security and faster postoperative recovery of patients. This approach has been verified in two case reports. In the treatment we used intelligent classifier-schemes for abnormal patterns using computer-based system for 3D-virtual and endoscopic assistance in rhinology, with appropriate visualization of anatomy and pathology within the nose, paranasal sinuses, and scull base area.

We investigated whether the maxillary sinus plays a stimulatory role in nasal nitric oxide (NO) synthesis. Research on sinusitis and nasal polyps has found low NO levels in exhaled air and linked this to obstruction of the ostium. However, the major source of NO in exhaled air is thought to be the nasal mucosa. In this study, Streptococcus pneumoniae was applied to the maxillary sinus to investigate changes in NO synthesis of the nasal mucosa. Tubercular infection of the nasal cavity is an infrequently encountered condition. More so, after the discovery of relevant antibiotics, nasal sinus tuberculosis is not commonly seen. Few cases have reported tuberculosis of the paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx and larynx. With the increasing incidence of HIV, these rare forms of infection have started re-emerging. We present a case of a middle aged man presenting with nasal cavity lesion along with pulmonary tuberculosis, which came to light only after the diagnosis of maxillary sinus tuberculosis.

The short-term effects of local intranasal administration of fusafungine were studied for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties against experimentally induced bacterial rhinosinusitis. The maxillary sinuses of 20 rabbits were infected with encapsulated Streptococcus pneumoniae after mechanical occlusion of each animal’s anatomic ostium. Either fusafungine solution or placebo was administered as a nasal spray through the nostrils twice daily for 10 days. Histopathological grading of inflammation, biochemical assay of inflammatory mediators, and the number of bacterial species isolated from the nasal cavities all showed significant recovery from inflammation after fusafungine treatment. The beneficial effects of fusafungine on inflamed sinus mucosa may possibly also be attributable to an initial alleviation of inflammation in the nasal cavity, which permitted entry of the drug to the sinus cavity through a partially reopened ostium. A reciprocal relationship between nasal and sinus reactivity involving generalization of inflammation and recovery was also thought to be of importance. The present findings indicate that local applications of fusafungine may effectively improve clinical conditions producing rhinitis and sinusitis.

A study of the comparative in vitro activity of telithromycin, a new ketolide, against 155 aerobic and 171 anaerobic antral sinus puncture isolates showed it to be active against a broad range of sinus pathogens. All pneumococci, including erythromycin-resistant strains, were susceptible to telithromycin at ≤0.5 μg/ml; all Haemophilus influenzae and Eikenella corrodens strains were inhibited by ≤4 μg of telithromycin/ml; all Moraxella spp. and beta-lactamase-producing Prevotella species strains were inhibited by ≤0.25 and 0.5 μg of telithromycin/ml, respectively. Among all anaerobes tested, 94% (160 of 171 strains) were susceptible to ≤4 μg of telithromycin/ml; however, 8 of 17 (47%) Fusobacterium strains, 2 Veillonella strains, and 1 Peptostreptococcus micros strain required >4 μg of telithromycin/ml for inhibition. Telithromycin may offer a therapeutic alternative for sinus infections, including those due to erythromycin-resistant pneumococci.

The bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis in relation to different sinoscopic appearances is reported in this study. When transantral sinoscopy via an anterior wall puncture was used to examine the maxillary antra in patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis, the sinoscopic appearances were divided into five types. Maxillary antra in which ostia were recognized under the endoscope and no secretion existed were classified as type 1. Maxillary antra in which ostia were not recognized and no secretion existed belonged to type 2. Maxillary antra in which seromucoid secretion existed belonged to type 3. Maxillary accessory ostium is one of the anatomical variations that may play a role in the development of chronic maxillary sinusitis. Although some authors claim that accessory ostia develop following acute maxillary sinusitis, it is not clear whether they are congenital or acquired. Animal experimental study. In phase 1, lateral nasal walls of five New Zealand type rabbits were examined for the presence of natural and accessory ostia of the maxillary sinus and any area resembling fontanelles in humans. The surgical ciliated cyst was first described by Kubo in 1927 as a maxillary cyst arising after surgery for chronic maxillary sinusitis. Although rarely written about in English-language journals, there have been numerous reports of this lesion in the Japanese literature, where it is often called the “postoperative maxillary” or “paranasal cyst” and is one of the most frequently encountered bony cysts of the jaws. It is reported to occur in up to 20% of patients who have undergone a radical operation on the maxillary sinus.1-3 The surgical ciliated or postoperative maxillary cyst is a locally aggressive lesion, usually developing as a delayed complication many years after surgery. It presents as an expansile swelling of the maxillary alveolus and palate, with pain, discharge, or fistula formation in some cases. Radiographically, it appears as a well-defined unilocular radiolucency closely associated with the maxillary sinus; bilateral lesions have been reported in some cases.3 In 1988, Basu et al4 reported 23 cases of postoperative maxillary cysts and noted that this lesion may be more common outside Japan than has previously been suggested possibly due to misdiagnosis. In 1990, Sugar et al5 reported 3 cases of surgical ciliated cysts that developed 3 to 4 years after mid-face orthognathic surgery, and in 1991 Misch et al6 described a case of a postoperative maxillary cyst that developed after a sinus elevation procedure. In 1993 Hayhurst et al7 described a case of a surgical ciliated cyst that developed within the anterior hard palate 5 years after a segmental Le Fort I osteotomy and reviewed 9 other cases with a similar diagnosis. We now report the case of a patient with a very large surgical ciliated cyst that developed in the maxilla 5 years after a Le Fort I advancement osteotomy. Diagnosis was delayed, resulting in several surgical procedures before definitive treatment. The likely etiology, histology, and treatment of this unusual complication are also discussed.

To determine the pattern of aerobic bacteria isolated in patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis at the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, and the antibiotics sensitivity pattern of these organisms. A prospective hospital-based clinical study. Fifty - four patients with clinical diagnosis of chronic maxillary sinusitis were evaluated. Out of 54 maxillary sinus aspirate specimens studied, 31 yielded bacterial growths and 32 no bacterial growth. The common aerobic bacteria isolated were Staphylococcus aureus (32.3% ), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli were 16.1% each. Staphylococcus aureus was sensitive to Erythromycin, and the gram-negative organisms to Gentamicin. Bacteria isolated in chronic maxillary sinusitis and their sensitivity patterns varied.
