Introduction: This study aims to analyze the references that the authors and editors used during the writing of Rosen's Emergency Medicine, 8th edition. Methods: 15,209 references, which were used in 197 chapters of Rosen's Emergency Medicine, 8th edition, were examined regarding the distribution of countries, journals, publication year, and the department of the affiliation of the first author. Results: A total of 63.1% (n = 9591) of the references were led by authors from the United States (US). US-based journals were mostly used, and Annals of Emergency Medicine was the journal from which the references were most frequently extracted, with a percentage of 5.2% (n = 756). The studies conducted by emergency physicians have increased in recent years, and emergency physicians, with a percentage of 17.8% (n = 351), were the leading authors of studies conducted between 2010 and 2013, which were cited in the references of Rosen's Emergency Medicine, 8th edition. Conclusion: US-based studies make up a significantly bigger portion of the references used in Rosen's Emergency Medicine, 8th edition. If Europe and other countries give due importance to emergency medicine, they will have the capability to produce studies that can be used as references in textbooks as much as the US.

As part of Phase I of a project to map the literature of nursing, sponsored by the Nursing and Allied Health Resources Section of the Medical Library Association, this study identifies the core literature cited in nursing administration and the indexing services that provide access to the core journals. The results of this study will assist librarians and end users searching for information related to this nursing discipline, as well as database producers who might consider adding specific titles to their indexing services. Objective: This paper describes a citation analysis of the literature of rehabilitation nursing, conducted as part of the Medical Library Association's Nursing and Allied Health Section's the “Mapping the Literature of Nursing Project.”Methods: One core journal, Rehabilitation Nursing, was selected, being both the official journal of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses and the only journal devoted exclusively to rehabilitation nursing. Citations were analyzed according to format and date and stratified according to Bradford's Law of Scattering.Results: The nineteen journals that constitute Zone 1 contribute the same number of citations as the eighty-six journals that make up Zone 2. OCLC ArticleFirst, PubMed/MEDLINE, and CINAHL provide the most inclusive coverage of the rehabilitation literature. The source journal, Rehabilitation Nursing, is the most important journal in Zone 1 and thus the most influential rehabilitation nursing journal. Relative degrees of database coverage do not change between Zones 1 and 2.Conclusion: The journals in Zones 1 and 2 collectively represent most of the important subspecialties of rehabilitation nursing, such as the physiological, sociopsychological, and community reintegration issues involved in the long-term rehabilitation process.

A major aspiration of the medical community is to use multimedia databases to disseminate important research or clinical information and for education. We describe a WWW reference library of 3D models of human organs containing pathological and normal organs organised in cases, together with a variety of educational and supporting tools. Although the emphasis is chiefly on the teaching of medical students and the continuing education of physicians, the library is also a potentially-valuable resource for diagnostic investigation. This paper describes the environment, methodologies and tools for supporting 3D models in medical education. The prototype of the system is currently being completed; the full system is scheduled for public access in the year 2000 through multimedia publishers.

This article examines a fifteenth-century remedy book, Oxford, Bodleian Library, Rawlinson c. 299, and describes its collection of 314 medieval medical prescriptions. The recipes are organised broadly from head to toe, and often several remedies are offered for the same complaint. Some individual recipes are transcribed with modern English translations. The few non-recipe texts are also noted. The difference between a remedy book and a leechbook is explained, and this manuscript is situated in relation to other known examples of late medieval medical anthologies. The particular feature that distinguishes Oxford, Bodleian Library, Rawlinson c. 299 from other similar volumes is the evidence that it continued to be used during the sixteenth century. Brachytherapy is a conventional method of radiation therapy characterized by peculiar technical, clinical, operational and radioprotection problems. Therefore, the management of a service or department of brachytherapy requires a specific organization aimed at Quality Assurance. In this report, the personal experience with the drawing up of a Quality Handbook of brachytherapy with reference to the method used and the structure of the document, is described.
