Recently discussions on the self have revolved around the distinction between the minimal and the narrative selves. This paper seeks to build a bridge between the minimal and the narrative self based on the Dual Systems Theory. This theory defends that there are two minds in one brain: one of them —called System1 or S1— is old, universal and shared with other species; while the other one —called System2 or S2— is modern, shaped by culture and distinctively human. We propose in this work to identify the minimal self with processes that underlie S1 and the narrative self with processes that underlie S2.
