Triggered by a bite from a tick, about 8,000 people in the UK may have been infected in 2019, according to new research: three times higher than the previous estimate of 2,000 – 3,000 annual cases. Doctors are not required to report LD, so the true scale of infection could be even higher. There are at least 300,000 new cases every year in the USA, where LD is routinely recorded.
