Introducing internationally bestselling author Bolu Babalola’s dazzling debut novel, full of passion, humor, and heart, that centers on a young Black British woman who has no interest in love and unexpectedly finds herself caught up in a fake relationship with the man she warned her girls about
Sweet like plantain, hot like pepper. They taste the best when together...
Sharp-tongued (and secretly soft-hearted) Kiki Banjo has just made a huge mistake. As an expert in relationship-evasion and the host of the popular student radio show Brown Sugar, she’s made it her mission to make sure the women of the African-Caribbean Society at Whitewell University do not fall into the mess of “situationships”, players, and heartbreak. But when the Queen of the Unbothered kisses Malakai Korede, the guy she just publicly denounced as “The Wastemen of Whitewell,” in front of every Blackwellian on campus, she finds her show on the brink.
They’re soon embroiled in a fake relationship to try and salvage their reputations and save their futures. Kiki has never surrendered her heart before, and a player like Malakai won’t be the one to change that, no matter how charming he is or how electric their connection feels. But surprisingly entertaining study sessions and intimate, late-night talks at old-fashioned diners force Kiki to look beyond her own presumptions. Is she ready to open herself up to something deeper?
A gloriously funny and sparkling debut novel, Honey and Spice is full of delicious tension and romantic intrigue that will make you weak at the knees.
""A smart, sexy summer read, which hits your brain and your romance buttons in one shot."" — Los Angeles Times
""The ultimate summer romance . . . It’s got all the juiciest, most satisfying romance tropes, but in Babalola’s capable hands, the story feels fresh and unique."" — The Cut, New York magazine
“Divine summer reading. Hilarious, hot, and heartfelt. ” — Meg Cabot, #1 New York Times bestselling author
Editor's Note
Wit, vulnerability, and charm…
Babalola’s (“Love in Color”) romance debut is full of wit and vulnerability. Kiki Banjo, a British Nigerian student at Whitewell College, is more interested in doling out love advice on her radio show “Brown Sugar” than experiencing love herself. She’s quick to disparage Malakai Korede, a smug recent transfer, to her listeners. But when the two form a fake relationship that’s mutually beneficial, the resulting attention (and Malakai’s charm) force Kiki to reevaluate her guarded heart.

He was always right there with a witty come back and vice versa. That’s the best types of conversations to have, ones that are funny and make you think on your feet. This was a great read.

And watching some of their stories unfold publicly on campus. That was the best time of my life and this book beautifully escorted me down memory lane…
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely fantastic audio performance attached to an amazing heartfelt story. I could’ve gone without the third-act breakup, but alas as a romance reader I’m used to it even though I don’t like it! Would still 100% recommend.

This book made me feel so many emotions and made you love the dynamic between Malakai and Kiki from the jump. I loved the way the relationships in this book were portrayed especially on the people from our past still being important to us just not in the same way. It was beautiful and captivating all around but the narrator just made the story that much better.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I will still write a comprehensive review of this book, but till then, let's say a few things.
First of all, I love the language the author employs in the book. I listened to the audiobook version, and I really enjoyed Weruche's tone and voice when she says things like 'you're moving mad.'
This is a beautiful Romcom, a fake dating trope, but it's beautiful regardless. I love how the author describes love, and how she paints it to be a cute image. And I love the fact that Kiki gets to experience true love for once, even if it started as a fake dating. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5OH WOW‼️ “Honey and Spice” is a well written novel by Bolu Babalola. This was my first book from this author..and a delightful read too‼️ Thereafter, I appreciated (empathize) the social political commentaries/dramas of “chocolate people” navigating campus life; enjoyed the friendship of Kiki and Amina as well as the frenemy-banter between Malakai and Kiki. Yes there where a few cultural obscurities. But nothing offense and or so ambiguous that would interfere with completing this novel. I applaud the narrator Weruche Opie on a superb performance ??????‼️ I’m looking forward to other projects from both Ms. Babalola and Ms. Opie.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved everything about this book. I’d read it again.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely divine. Completed in two days and couldn’t stop thinking about it when I wasn’t listening. You fall in love with the main character and her friends, and if you’re like me, you’ll cry at the amount of genuine love you’ll feel at the end. Outstanding work. I’ll remember this for a very long time. HIGHLY recommend.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5"Your energy grabbed me by the throat. You're electric. Like lightning. Bright with it. Bold with it."
I have been thoroughly entertained. I'm still kicking my feet in the air like a love sick fool. Once I am done with all that giddiness, I'm getting candles just so I can try manifesting Malakai Korede into existence! He is perfection. ?? - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is one of the best books . Love the story world (white-world), love the friendships and most of all I loved the LOVE STORY
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/54.5 stars. Shy of .5 because of the overly descriptive nature. I loved it!
