      Surviving in the Sandwich Generation

      This book is the story of my life in the Sandwich Generation. As you read my story, you may recognize yourself in my dilemmas, issues, and confrontations. I have learned to cope, although it has been a hard and long struggle. I will give you solutions that work for me for every aspect of being a caregiver in the Sandwich Generation. YOU ARE NOT ALONE and you are not a bad person for how you feel!

      WHAT IS THE SANDWICH GENERATION?

      Picture a sandwich. You’ve got two pieces of bread on the outside and stuff in the middle. The Sandwich Generation is the stuff in the middle!

      The Sandwich Generation is defined, in my opinion and in my experience, as that generation of people who have two or more generations in their immediate care, in which they are sandwiched in the middle. These can be children – young, or maybe even needy grown children -- and maybe even grandchildren -- and needy parents, too. It seems to be especially difficult for generations of women, although men are certainly not immune. Women not only care for their family but oftentimes their spouse’s family as well. Basically, we Sandwich Generationers (I just made up a new word) are family caretakers. We become parents to our children and our parents, or even parents to our grandchildren, all at the same time. We may have an adult child who is still living at home, refusing to cut the umbilical cord. Being a Sandwich Generationer is an emotional, physical, and financial challenge and hardship. Maybe some Sandwich Generationers can cope well with these challenges, but I think the whole reason for calling it the Sandwich Generation is because of the difficulties with being in the middle of it. People are living longer and longer, so four and even five living generations is not unusual. And in today’s economy, more and more families are living in the same house. Kids move back home, parents move in with grandparents. Even grandchildren move in with grandparents and great grandparents, as in my
