Chapter 1 – The Atkins Diet: An Overview
There are many diet programs out there ranging from the downright weird to the expensive. And if you are reading this book, chances are you have already undergone one of these diet fads or are looking for a diet program that will work for you.
Various diet programs have different principles and medical facts to back them up. Some are even endorsed by the government like the DASH and the Mediterranean. Some makes you think that what our ancestors used to eat are what’s good for us like the Paleo diet plan. And a lot of these diets have one thing in common. They preach that if you want to lower your weight, you should eat less calories than what you burn. Also, almost all of them tell you that fat is bad for you.
The Atkins diet program, however, contradicts the common foundation of most diet patterns available. Consumption of fairly large amounts of meats, cheese, eggs and butter are not just allowed, they are even recommended at some point. If you have undergone a common diet plan before, what you will learn during your journey to the Atkins diet program may somewhat shock your foundations of how a healthy eating pattern should be.
Maybe that’s what made Atkins controversial since its introduction during the early 70’s by the late Dr. Atkins because it seems to contradict what the other diet programs advocate – low fat means reduced weight. Some of the foods recommended by the Atkins diet system are even considered taboo by most dieticians and you may have grown to the teaching that these foods can cause a lot of diseases, especially to the cardiovascular system.
But with the thousands of individuals with weight problems who have tried the Atkins diet system, from the common people to celebrities, most of them say that it works. And it works pretty well that it’s really a surprise to those who have adapted the Atkins lifestyle. And several research studies have even proven that it’s more effective than most of the popular diet systems out there like Zone, Ornish, and LEARN diet programs in burning fat.
Some medical experts have warned against what may be the adverse effects of going through the Atkins diet program in long term partly because of the consumption of fat and high amounts of protein. Concerns ranging from cardiovascular diseases to abnormal metabolism have come up because of the popularity of the Atkins diet program. Surprisingly though, after some medical research studies, results show that there is no huge difference between the health status of those who follow the Atkins diet plan as compared to those who follow the USDA.
Americans, usually, eat a lot of carbohydrates. It’s even recommended by the USDA Food Pyramid that an average individual consume six to eleven servings of carbohydrate-rich foods per day. Examples of these are foods that have refined sugar and white flour like pasta, bread and cereals.
The Atkins diet, on the other hand, is based on the limited consumption of carbohydrates. According to the late Dr. Atkins, when you go through the four phases of the Atkins diet system by lowering the intake of carbohydrates, you push your body to look for other calorie reserves, mainly body fat for fuel. According to him, this leads to dramatic weight and fat reduction. And this what a lot of people around the world has proven for themselves.
