What is Yoga Therapy?
A safe and regular practice of yoga therapy can:
decrease stress
relieve anxiety
reduce inflammation
improve heart health
improves the quality of life
fight depression
reduce chronic pain
reduce menopausal symptoms
promote sleep quality
improves flexibility, balance, and mobility in older people
help improve breathing
relieve migraines
promote healthy eating habits, and
increase strength.
The International Association of Yoga Therapy says even if all yoga is potentially therapeutic and healing, yoga therapy is the specific application of yogic tools—postures/exercises, breath work, meditation techniques, and more—to address an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional needs.
Yoga Therapy is complementary to Western or Chinese medicine. Complementary therapies are usually used alongside the more standard medical care. They view health and disease different from western medicine, which is starting to look at patients in a more holistic way. Yoga therapy has its basis in Ayurveda. The way it is mostly practised in the western world is not related to a specific religion or religious sect but as a system to good health and healing at all levels.
Yoga therapists receive a rigorous training to help them test you and keep you, their clients, safe. They are trained to work one-on-one with individuals and do not take the place of doctors, chiropractors, or physical therapists. They are motivated to teach individuals how the mind, body and prana work experientially, and take limitations into consideration. They will give you customized practices that include movement, breathing techniques, meditation and/or visualization practices, and physical poses or postures that deal with specific areas of discomfort or musculoskeletal imbalances.
The advantage of yoga therapy over mainstream yoga is that it pays special attention to the individual. It is about people, not conditions. Working with clients as individuals is important as individuals requires different practices to help you manage their condition(s).
The focus in yoga therapy is on synchronizing movement with the breath, stretching muscles that are tight, and strengthening muscles that are weak. Yoga therapy deals mostly with chronic pain, the pain that has been going on for over six months, and for which treatment has or has not been sought.
When you first meet a qualified yoga therapist, the first session will be an intake to find out your medical history and assess where your body is out of balance. Based on these findings, a yoga practice sequence is recommended. It is helpful to continue seeing a yoga therapist as the recommended sequence may change depending on your state of health and well-being.
What is an Autoimmune Disease?
An autoimmune disease is a condition where your immune system erroneously attacks your body. The immune system inaccurately think that some parts of the body are external and releases antibodies that attack healthy cells. They are the medical equivalent of friendly fire, and can cause serious damage.
The immune system is the body's defense against infectious organisms and other external invaders. When it becomes underactive or overactive, it is usually due to an immune system disease. If the immune system is overactive, the body attacks and damages its own tissues. If the immune system is underactive, the
