Preface
With more than twenty years in information technology (IT) and many advanced degrees, including a PhD in management information systems, I was lucky—based on my drive for excellence—to be part of something greater in our organization. I am very well versed in innovative technologies and have been researching automation and robotics for more than ten years. In addition, I have spent more than fifteen years working on data management and analytics platforms, including the foundational aspects of taxonomy management and data-segregation practices. All this background knowledge assists with understanding the requirements and thought process required to implement robotic process automation (RPA) effectively within an organization.
RPA, also affectionately known as intelligent process automation, has been around for years. When I first received a demo of RPA in late 2016, I quickly realized that RPA is similar to the old testing suites that have been supercharged and rebranded as RPA. In my past life (more than a decade ago), I worked as an automation engineer. My team and I tested within multiple tools. This book shares tips on deployment based on information from leading experts, industry professionals, personal research, and various conferences regarding what works and what does not work.
This book is meant to be a CliffsNotes version of RPA implementation. Writing this book required many hours on the road, multiple trips, lots of questions, and asking about best practices from others on their own RPA journeys. I hope it enlightens you and challenges you to continue to ask what we aren’t implementing and how we can get started.
I was motivated to write this book because of my love of sharing knowledge with others and to educate others on the steps of successful RPA deployment.
Introduction
Has your leadership made one of these statements?
• We need to cut Operations and Maintenance (O&M) costs.
• With all the retirements and increased workload, how will we ever complete all the work?
• We need to increase the time we spend on more value-added activities, but how do we accomplish this with fewer dollars and fewer resources?
• IT is already strapped, and we need this report automated yesterday. How are we going to accomplish this task?
If your leadership is struggling to find a way to reduce O&M, increase value-added activities, and allow the business to assist in the management of more technical tasks, you have probably heard of robotic process automation (RPA). RPA is basically software that automates manual and repetitive tasks. Just imagine: instead of going into work and having your team create reports and pull data from systems before performing analysis, your team is walking into the reports already being run and starting analysis as soon as they arrive. How much time and effort could that save your team? That’s just one example of how RPA can assist in streamlining workflow and increasing organizational efficiencies.
This book should be read by anyone who wants to know how to deploy RPA effectively in their organization or who simply wants to have a better understanding of the key aspects prior to determining whether RPA is right for their organization. This book
