INTRODUCTION
The Mahabharat depicts sibling rivalry, diplomatic manoeuvrings and shifting of human values. It climaxes in a direct confrontation on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, between five sons of King Pandu (Pandavs) and hundred sons of King Dhritarastra (Kauravas). It is a tale of war between brothers – between sons and fathers; students and teachers.
It marks the end of Dvapar Yuga (an era of morals, values and principles) and the commencement of Kal Yuga (an era of selfishness, deceit and immorality).
The Mahabharat is divided into eighteen books or chapters (called Parvas):

MAHATMA VIDUR
King Vichitravera died suddenly,
Wives Ambika, Ambalika childless be,
So, Satyavati, his mother, resolutely,
Beseeched Veda Vyasa Rishi.

For royal line continuance only,
For the kingdom and family,
To assistance unambiguously,
To create their future progeny.

And so the famed Vyasa Rishi,
Father three children subsequently,
Dhritrashtra of Ambika solely,
And Pandu of Ambalika clearly.

Third by Vyas born to maid be,
Of Ambika was Vidur assuredly,
So he the half-brother did be,
Of Dhritrashtra and Pandu truly.

Mahatma Vidur considered to be,
The incarnation of Yama actually,
Embodiment of dharma does be,
Born due to Mandavya’s curse only.

As Yama punished him clearly,
In excess of sin committed truly,
And Yama then then born did be,
As the Mahatma Vidur eventually.

Vidur with his half-brothers be,
Educated by Bhishma clearly,
Known for speaking truth only,
Intelligent, knowledgeable surely.

Was his brother’s minister plainly,
Pandavs friend, Krishna’s devotee,
In spite of royal minister actually,
Led a simple life ever gracefully.

On science of politics mainly,
Rides the famous Vidur Neeti,
Account amidst Mahatma Vidur be,
And King Dhritrashtra clearly.

Found in the great Hindu history,
Epic of the Mahabharat undeniably,
Is cited as the precursor clearly,
Of the more famous Chanakya Neeti.

UDYOG PARVA: SUMMARY
Udyog Parva embeds treatises many,
As leadership, diplomats, envoys truly,
It shows a theory of what just war be,
What one’s conduct at war should be.

Vidur counsels Dhritrashtra clearly,
On leadership, wise characteristics truly,
Trifles to prevent war by urging plainly,
Dhritarashtra to review his acts simply.

The Pandavs resided hopefully,
At Upaplavya - desirous of victory
Botgh Duryodhan and Arjun jointly,
Wished Krishna’s help intensely.

Lord Krishna replied forthrightly,
He would not fight this war truly,
Would just counsel one party,
To other party provide his army.

Arjun solicited Krishna reverently,
Duryodhan requested for army,
Before onset of war in actuality,
He involved in deceitful activities.

When Madra King rode clearly,
To assist Pandavs indisputably,
Was induced for boon cunningly,
Intreated to help Duryodhan openly.

Hearing Pandavs’ resolve truly,
With all their friends collectively,
With Krishna and others plainly,
But preparing for the war finally.

King Dhritrashtra sleep lost be,
Owing to the future war anxiety,
Heard brother Vidur wisdom saintly,
Filled with truth and philosophy.

Sage Vidur outlines things wise surely,
Should do, and not do in actuality,
These known as Viduraniti.do be,
As seen from examples below clearly:

Ever do desire for all prosperity,
Never set heart on inflicting misery;
Pay attention to those who fallen be,
Who are in distress and adversity.

Ignore not dependant’s suffering surely,
Even if the suffering is small actually,
Show compassion to all creatures truly,
Do good for all not just a select few only.

Never impede development, growth truly,
Of agriculture or any economic activity,
Ever be prepared to protect completely,
Who depend on you for safety, security.

To your people fair and accessible be,
Success by virtue attain sustain definitely,
Consider welfare of all your responsibility.
Boost learning, knowledge spread fully.

Encourage profit and virtue steadfastly,
Prosperity depends on good deeds truly,
And good deeds depend on prosperity.
Avoid friendship with the sinful unfailingly.

Never misuse riches, or speak hatefully,
Nor inflict extreme or cruel penalties,
Appoint positions who examined be,
For virtue, disposition and fair activity.

It also includes many verses plainly,
For personal growth, wise ways truly,
Advises shedding anger, emotion fully,
Pride, shame, stupefaction and vanity.
