Preface
There are many less-fortunate children in our society who need good role models in their lives. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child.
Choosing to care for children who need love, comfort, and understanding in their lives can provide a wonderful feeling for the caregiver even if the children are not your biological children. Choosing to provide foster care can make a huge difference in a child’s life! But be aware, there are serious negative aspects to foster care which can change your life forever! Your life could suffer emotional, financial and legal damage from which you may never fully recover.
This handbook is designed to be an informational guide for those who have contemplated providing adolescent foster care but did not know where to begin. In the following pages, I will provide insight to the world of adolescent foster care and examine the rewards as well as the perils of providing foster care. I will discuss fundamental skills necessary for good, effective parenting. Background environments and dysfunctional family structures of many children in foster care will also be discussed. Hopefully this book will provide insight on what to expect if you choose to travel this path.
Chapter 1
Getting Started
Many may wonder how and why people provide adolescent foster care. Well this is how it started for my wife Debbie and I. I met my wife in 1993 at a celebration party for the brother of a friend. We immediately connected and started dating a short time later. She was single and the mother of a sixteen year old boy and two teenage girls, ages eleven and thirteen. I was single and the father of a three year old son. We married a year later and everything was fine. We were one big, happy family.
As the teenagers grew older and began leaving home to go to college, our youngest son was left with no children at home to play with. Around this time some friends of ours were providing adolescent foster care and asked if we would be interested in providing foster care also. My wife and I discussed it and came to the conclusion that it would be a good idea because we could "kill two birds with one stone.. We would be providing an under privileged child with a good home and our son would have a foster brother tokeep him company. We just needed to know the process to get started. After lengthy research, we found that becoming licensed foster parents is not a short or easy process; there are many steps which must be taken.
You have the option to contract with your local Social Service Department or with a Child Placement Agency. Following the recommendation of our friends, we chose to contract with a Child Placement Agency because our friends were more familiar with this process and could perhaps provide us with some guidance.
