Paranormal Stories to Scare Your Socks Off! - Michael Dahl
IT’S IN THE RUNES
Benjamin Harper
I found something!
I shouted over my shoulder to my cousin Andrea. She and I were at a family gathering in Half Moon Bay. We were exploring the mysterious shoreline together while our parents caught up on boring stuff like job promotions and new houses.
What is it?
she shouted excitedly, running past a giant pile of driftwood and seaweed.
It looks like some kind of necklace,
I replied, holding the relic in my hand. It was octagonal and had a red stone in the middle that shone in the sunlight. There were weird markings all around the edge surrounding the stone.
What does it say?
Andrea asked, pointing at the engravings. I had no idea. It looked really, really old.
Let’s take it to the library,
I decided. The librarian will know what to do.
We ran down the beach toward the cottage we had rented for the week and out the front door.
We’re going to the library,
we called to our bewildered parents. We’ll be back soon!
When we got to the library, we rushed right over to the information desk. I plonked the amulet down on the wooden surface a little more enthusiastically than I should have in a library, but I needed answers!
We have a question,
I said to the stunned librarian, who turned her attention away from her computer. Can you tell us what this is?
I pointed at the strange markings on the amulet.
Hmm,
the librarian pondered, gazing at our mysterious treasure. I think I know just the thing for you two.
She got up and led us over to the stacks of books.
Here it is!
she exclaimed after running her fingers along the spines of several dusty old tomes. You should be able to find your answer here.
Ancient Alphabets and Their Meanings, the book’s title read.
Thank you!
we both said as we ran over to a table to do some research.
I’ll be very interested in your findings,
the librarian told us before walking back to her desk.
Flipping through the pages, we saw examples of several ancient alphabets, all with crazy shapes. No, no, no!
I said. None of these is right!
Then we turned the page. Aha!
Andrea pointed. This is it!
On the page before us was an alphabet called the Elder Futhark. Runes! Of course!
