The Adventures of Sully - Lawrence Olusoji Omotayo
Introduction
AT about midnight, Sully felt the urgent need to urinate and he got up. He went to the door at the back of the hut, and opened the raffia mat that was used to cover the entrance and urinated. Grandfather was fast asleep and he didn't even rouse. Sully lay on the bed, his eyes on the entrance of the hut.
A few minutes later, he heard a muffled sound and he became alert. He strained his ears. Thereafter, he saw a faint glow of light a few meters away from the front door of the hut. He got up – his ‘weapon’ in his pocket, unafraid of whatever danger the night might be hiding.
Two people in silhouette were moving ahead of him. He could see the outline form against the torchlight the person in front was carrying. He followed them leaving enough space in between them and him.
The two men passed through the narrow path that went past the clearing his grandfather and he had seen earlier. He hid behind one of the kola-nut trees so as not to expose himself. The one in front looked back, pointing his torchlight to see if someone was following them. Thereafter, he turned right, as the beam of his torch disappeared.
Sully quickened his steps after them till they got to an isolated hut away from the farms in the forest. Sully moved close as the two men went inside the hut. He heard voices within.
Have you contacted them?
a deep voice said.
The man carrying the torch said, We've asked them to bring 50 million naira if they want to see their children alive.
That's good!
the deep voice said. When are they bringing it?
They are not forthcoming yet, but they are begging us for 5 million,
the third man said.
Tell them the last amount is Ten million,
the voice continued. Tell them, we'll send their children's bodies if by tomorrow evening the money is not paid.
Ok,
the third man said. We have some food for you and the children.
The boss collected the food and said, You may go now, but be careful.
The man hesitated a little.
The voice went further: I need you to tell Skiddo to come and see me latest 5.30 am tomorrow. We must finish this business latest tomorrow evening. I don't feel safe here.
The man said,
We'll surely come tomorrow with news for you, boss. Can we accept something between five and eight million?"
"Go and negotiate it. The exchange is at 8 pm. They can pick up the
