The COVID-19 pandemic crisis has increased the vulnerability and decreased the retention in treatment of patients receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on craving and quality of life (QoL) of MAT patients and to reveal the potential role of medication dose. Thus, 562 volunteers were divided into the control group (n = 100) comprising healthy volunteers without prior contact with substances of abuse, and into the experimental group (n = 462), which included patients receiving MAT, who were stratified into sub-groups of patients under methadone and buprenorphine. The groups were further divided into two sub-groups, based on whether the participants were infected by SARS-CoV-2 or not. The heroin craving questionnaire (HCQ), and the Nottingham health profile (NHP) instrument were used for craving assessment and QoL evaluation respectively. The MAT patients who were infected by SARS-CoV-2 had higher levels of craving compared to their non-infected counterparts, and COVID-19 restriction measures reduced QoL mainly of non-infected MAT patients. Furthermore, low craving and high QoL were largely associated with medium or low medication dose. It appears that focused interventions and modifications to medication doses could lead to better clinical outcomes of the MAT programs and relapse prevention. Full article

The influence of Acrylate Styrene Acrylonitrile (ASA) and ASA/nanosilica (ASA/Si) additives was investigated by using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Firstly, an ASA polymer was blended with the virgin asphalt binder at two different concentrations (3% ASA and 5% ASA). After observing that 5% ASA was the optimum concentration for modification, nanosilica particles were further incorporated into the 5% ASA-modified asphalt binder with two different percentages (5% ASA 3%Si; 5% ASA 5%Si). Frequency sweep tests were conducted across various frequencies at elevated temperatures. The experimental outcomes were analyzed using master curves, rutting, and fatigue resistance parameter plots. Additionally, to provide a more holistic analysis, two different multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques, namely the Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE) and the Technique for the Order of Preference by a Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS), were conducted to identify the best-performing asphalt binder by considering three different parameters: workability, performance under different conditions, and cost. The frequency sweep tests showed that the 5% ASA 5%Si asphalt worked best in terms of resistance to rutting. On the other hand, the virgin binder performed better than all modified binders when it failed to resist fatigue. On the other hand, the PROMETHEE analysis identified the 5% ASA-modified asphalt binder as the optimal choice, while the TOPSIS analysis determined that the 5% ASA 3%Si-modified binder provided the best performance. The differences between the experimental results and the MCDA were due to using more than one evaluation parameter and looking at how well the asphalt binder worked at different temperature ranges at the same time. The management of advanced heart failure (HF) has long posed significant challenges due to its complex and chronic nature. Heart transplantation, while effective, is not always feasible due to the limited availability of donor organs. In this context, long term mechanical circulatory support and mainly left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have emerged as a vital intervention to fill this gap. LVAD superiority compared to medical therapy for some patients in advanced heart failure has been demonstrated either as a bridge to transplantation or as destination therapy. This literature review provides a comprehensive overview of the effectiveness, challenges, and advancements in the use of LVADs for treating advanced heart failure. It evaluates clinical outcomes associated with LVAD therapy, focusing on survival rates and quality of life improvements. The review synthesizes findings from recent studies, highlighting both the benefits and complications of LVAD implantation, such as infectious risk, thromboembolic events, hemorrhage and device malfunction. Additionally, it explores the latest technological and biomedical advancements in LVAD design, including innovations in biocompatibility, miniaturization, and power management. By examining current research, this review aims to elucidate how LVADs are transforming heart failure treatment and to offer insights into future directions for clinical practice and research. This review examines the pivotal role of c-MYC in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), focusing on how its overexpression leads to increased genetic instability, thereby accelerating disease progression. MYC, a major oncogene, encodes a transcription factor that regulates essential cellular processes, including cell cycle control, proliferation, and apoptosis. In CLL cases enriched with unmutated immunoglobulin heavy chain variable (IGHV) genes, MYC is significantly overexpressed and associated with active rearrangements in the IGH immunoglobulin heavy chain locus. This overexpression results in substantial DNA damage, including double-strand breaks, chromosomal translocations, and an increase in abnormal repair events. Consequently, c-MYC plays a dual role in CLL: it promotes aggressive cell proliferation while concurrently driving genomic instability through its involvement in genetic recombination. This dynamic contributes not only to CLL progression but also to the overall aggressiveness of the disease. Additionally, the review suggests that c-MYC’s influence on genetic rearrangements makes it an attractive target for therapeutic strategies aimed at mitigating CLL malignancy. These findings underscore c-MYC’s critical importance in advancing CLL progression, highlighting the need for further research to explore its potential as a target in future treatment approaches. Background/Objectives: Endogenous metabolic pathways periodically adjust with fluctuations in day and night, a biological process known as circadian rhythm. Time-restricted eating (TRE) aligns the time of food intake with the circadian rhythm. This study aims to investigate the effects of TRE on body weight, body composition and cardiometabolic risk factors. Methods: We reviewed articles from PubMed and Cochrane libraries for clinical trials that compare TRE with regular diet without calorie restriction. We conducted a meta-analysis of 26 studies. Results: Participants who followed TRE demonstrated reduction in body weight [mean-MD: −1.622 kg, (95% confidence interval (CI −2.302 to −0.941)], body mass index (BMI) [MD: −0.919 kg/m2 (95% CI: −1.189 to −0.650)], waist circumference [MD: −2.015 cm (95% CI: −3.212 to −0.819] and whole-body fat mass (WBFM) [MD: −0.662 kg (95% CI: −0.795 to −0.530)]. Improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors such as a decrease in insulin concentrations [MD: −0.458 mIU/L, (95% CI: −0.843 to −0.073)], total cholesterol [MD: −2.889 mg/dL (95% CI: −5.447 to −0.330) and LDL concentrations [MD: −2.717 mg/dL (95% CI: −4.412 to −1.021)] were observed. Conclusions: TRE is beneficial for weight loss and improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors. Further large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings. Full article

Recently, there has been a growing interest in reducing waste to promote environmental sustainability, with particular focus on agricultural by-products, especially fruits and vegetables. Potato, a widely used crop across various industries, generates a significant amount of peel waste. This study aims to valorize potato peels using water bath extraction (WBE) and infrared-assisted extraction (IRAE), both with distilled water as the solvent, followed by assessments of antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-sprouting activities. Optimization using response surface methodology identified optimal extraction conditions for WBE (90 °C for 70 min) and IRAE (80 °C for 10 min), with both methods yielding 3.5 mg GAE/g DM in polyphenol content. IRAE demonstrated superior energy efficiency and enhanced antioxidant activity. The extracts exhibited antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive (Listeria monocytogenes) and Gram-negative bacteria (Proteus sp. and Salmonella sp.), with inhibition zones ranging from 10 to 14 mm. Furthermore, the potato peels extract showed significant anti-sprouting effects at room temperature, reducing both the number and size of sprouts compared with the control. HPLC analysis showed the presence of different phenolic compounds such as rutin, catechin, caffeic acid, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, and gallic acid in one or both extracts. These findings suggest that potato peels extract holds potential for applications in the food industry as a natural preservative due to its antioxidant properties, as well as a sprout suppressant. The antibacterial activity of the extracts suggests their potential as a natural preservative as well, offering protection against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria that may be present in food. Background: Shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal issue in primary care, affecting up to 50% of patients six months post-consultation, leading to significant functional impairments and societal costs, especially due to sick leave. Shoulder injuries are particularly prevalent among ‘overhead athletes’ in sports like swimming, volleyball, and handball, with high injury rates reported annually. Screening tools like the Arm Care Screen (ACS) have been used to effectively identify athletes at risk of shoulder injuries. However, their applicability to the general population is less understood. This study aimed to assess the discriminant validity of a modified ACS (MACS) in detecting musculoskeletal risk factors among non-athletes. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted with 30 asymptomatic subjects over 18, excluding those with a history of shoulder injuries or surgeries. The MACS, comprising four tests, was administered, and its diagnostic performance was evaluated through sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and likelihood ratios. Results: The results indicated low sensitivity (0–47.62%) and variable specificity (55.56–100%), suggesting that the MACS may not effectively identify risk factors in the general population. Positive and negative predictive values were inconsistent (ranging from 0 to 100), as well as positive and negative likelihood ratios (ranging from 0 to 3.47), highlighting the need for non-athlete-specific screening tools. Conclusion: While the MACS shows promise in athletes, its application in the general population requires further refinement. This study underscores the necessity for tailored screening methods to enhance the early detection and prevention of musculoskeletal issues in diverse populations. Full article

Background/Objectives: In this article, we present a literature review of methods used to measure the shaping ability of endodontic rotary files, including the selection of endodontic sample type (extracted teeth versus simulated blocks) and an imaging evaluation method. This review was conducted as background research to identify concerns that arise when designing research studies in this domain and propose how the field can plan more systematic studies going forward. Methods: A literature search was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and e B-on databases, including studies published in English from January 2010 to June 2024. Only studies that specified in vitro or ex vivo methods for evaluating the endodontic performance of NiTi rotary files on canal transportation and centering ability were considered. Results: A total of 86 studies met the inclusion criteria from an initial pool of 651. Of these, 67 studies used extracted teeth, while 20 utilized simulated root canals in resin blocks. For evaluation methods, 55 studies employed Micro-Computed Tomography and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (MCT + CBCT), 30 used Double Digital Images/Radiographs/Photographs (DDIR + DDIP) with software analysis, 1 used both DDIR and MCT, 1 used high-precision nano-CT, and 1 used a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. Conclusions: The findings indicate that the MCT method and its advanced variations appear superior in many cases for evaluating the quality of root canal instrumentation due to their ability to provide detailed three-dimensional images. We also discuss the pros and cons of other evaluation methods, including CBCT and DDIR. Finally, we identify important factors to consider for optimizing future cross-study comparisons. This work highlights the importance of being familiar with shaping ability assessment methods as new instruments are introduced to the market. Full article

Phenolic and Acidic Compounds in Radiation Fog at Strasbourg Metropolitan

Sixty-four phenols grouped as nitrated, bromo, amino, methyl, chloro-phenols, and cresols, and thirty-eight organic acids grouped as mono-carboxylic and dicarboxylic are analyzed in forty-two fog samples collected in the Alsace region between 2015 and 2021 to check their atmospheric behavior. Fogwater samples are collected using the Caltech Active Strand Cloudwater Collector (CASCC2), extracted using liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) on a solid cartridge (XTR Chromabond), and then analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results show the high capability of phenols and acids to be scavenged by fogwater due to their high solubility. Nitro-phenols and mono-carboxylic acids have the highest contributions to the total phenolic and acidic concentrations, respectively. 2,5-dinitrophenol, 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, and 3,4-dinitrophenol have the highest concentration, originating mainly from vehicular emissions and some photochemical reactions. The top three mono-carboxylic acids are hexadecenoic acid (C16), eicosanoic acid (C18), and dodecanoic acid (C12), whereas succinic acid, suberic acid, sebacic acid, and oxalic acid are the most concentrated dicarboxylic acids, originated either from atmospheric oxidation (mainly secondary organic aerosols (SOAs)) or vehicular transport. Pearson’s correlations show positive correlations between organic acids and previously analyzed metals (p < 0.05), between mono- and dicarboxylic acids (p < 0.001), and between the analyzed acidic compounds (p < 0.001), whereas no correlations are observed with previously analyzed inorganic ions. Total phenolic and acidic fractions are found to be much higher than those observed for pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) measured at the same region due to their higher scavenging by fogwater. The present study discusses how adopting cryptos affects financial inclusion in developing economies. Primary constructs like financial inclusion (FI), perceived economic empowerment (PEE), trust in financial institutions (TFI), user satisfaction (US), and cryptocurrency adoption (CA) were tested through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results indicated that CA significantly and positively influenced FI, US, TFI, and PEE. These relationships extend to the interaction effects: US, TFI, and PEE, all positively related to FI. This is a reflection of cryptocurrencies as an opportunity to redress most of the afflictions characteristic of traditional finance systems and to promote financial inclusion and economic empowerment in developing countries. Future research should also investigate whether digital literacy and regulatory environments support cryptocurrency access. Full article

This paper reports on the correlation between broken contact fingers and the shape of the current–voltage (I–V) curve of a photovoltaic (PV) module. It was found that the broken contact fingers of a solar cell in the PV module cause a noticeable change in the I–V curve of the PV module when the solar cell was partially shaded. The broken contact fingers were inspected by microscopic imaging and electroluminescence (EL) imaging, and a further investigation was carried out using a single solar cell. The results show that the fill factor of the cell decreased from 0.75 of full contact to 0.47 after 16 contact fingers were broken, confirming the correlation between the I–V curve shape and broken contact fingers. This result reveals that the shape of the I–V curve of a PV module under individual-cell partial shading may be used as an indicator of broken contact fingers, which offers an alternative approach to EL imaging for detecting broken contact fingers in PV modules in daylight. Introduction: Nurses seem to be persistently experiencing intense psychological repercussions, even after the official conclusion of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this cross-sectional study conducted after the end of the pandemic crisis, from 1 June 2023 to 30 June 2023, we evaluated the levels and explored the associations between anger, insomnia, and resilience among Greek nurses. Methods: A total of 441 nurses participated in an online survey and were invited to state their work experience, gender, and age and to complete the self-report measures of the Dimensions of Anger Reactions-5 (DAR-5), the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), and the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). Results: Overall, 62.1% of the participants presented with positive scores on the AIS, and 41.5% displayed positive values on the DAR-5 scale, whereas 24.9% demonstrated scores indicative of low resilience on the BRS. A regression analysis revealed that 23.5% of the variance in the AIS scores can be attributed to the DAR-5 scores and 3% to the BRS scores. A mediation analysis confirmed the protective role of resilience, contributing as a negative mediator in the DAR-5 and AIS relationship. Conclusions: Screening for insomnia symptoms and anger issues among nurses after the end of the pandemic and implementing appropriate interventions is considered imperative to avoid long-term health consequences. Most people struggle to articulate the reasons why a promotional email they are exposed to influences them to make a purchase. Marketing experts and companies find it beneficial to understand these reasons, even if consumers themselves cannot express them, by using neuromarketing tools, specifically the technique of eye tracking. This study analyses various types of email campaigns and their metrics and explores neuromarketing techniques to examine how email recipients view promotional emails. This study deploys eye tracking to investigate and also verify user attention, gaze, and behaviour. As a result, this approach assesses which elements of an email influence consumer purchasing decisions and which elements capture their attention the most. Furthermore, this study examines the influence of salary and the multiple-choice series of emails on consumer purchasing choices. The findings reveal that only the row that people choose to see in an email affects their purchasing decisions. Regarding promotional emails, the title and brand play a significant role, while in welcome emails, the main factor is primarily the title. Through web eye tracking, it is found that, in both promotional and welcome emails, large images captivate consumers the most. Finally, this work proposes ideas on how to improve emails for similar campaigns. Full article

Despite technological growth and worldwide advancements in various fields, the agriculture sector continues to face numerous challenges such as desertification, environmental pollution, resource scarcity, and the excessive use of pesticides and inorganic fertilizers. These unsustainable problems in agricultural field can lead to land degradation, threaten food security, affect the economy, and put human health at risk. To mitigate these global issues, it is essential for researchers and agricultural professionals to promote advancements in smart agriculture by integrating modern technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), and more. Among these technologies, this paper focuses on UAVs, particularly quadcopters, which can assist in each phase of the agricultural cycle and improve productivity, quality, and sustainability. With their diverse capabilities, quadcopters have become the most widely used UAVs in smart agriculture and are frequently utilized by researchers in various projects. To explore the different aspects of quadcopters’ use in smart agriculture, this paper focuses on the following: (a) the unique advantages of quadcopters over other UAVs, including an examination of the quadcopter types particularly used in smart agriculture; (b) various agricultural missions where quadcopters are deployed, with examples highlighting their indispensable role; (c) the modelling of quadcopters, from configurations to the derivation of mathematical equations, to create a well-modelled system that closely represents real-world conditions; and (d) the challenges that must be addressed, along with suggestions for future research to ensure sustainable development. Although the use of UAVs in smart agriculture has been discussed in other papers, to the best of our knowledge, none have specifically examined the most popular among them, “quadcopters”, and their particular use in smart agriculture in terms of types, applications, and modelling techniques. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive survey of quadcopters’ use in smart agriculture and offers researchers and engineers valuable insights into this evolving field, presenting a roadmap for future enhancements and developments.
