(social Virtual Reality) Getting together in a simulated world using a 3D VR system and social app. Participants appear as avatars in lifelike or fantasy environments and they socialize, build worlds and play games. Although not virtual reality (VR), in 2003, Second Life introduced the first virtual world on desktop computers where people strike up relationships (see Second Life). See metaverse, avatar, virtual reality and Horizon Worlds.

vTime Social VR A sample social scene via vTime virtual reality, which is available for various VR systems. Participants choose their own avatars and interact as if they are actually in the simulated environment. (Image courtesy of vTime Holdings Limited.)
