2 - PROJECTILE MOTION An object is thrown with an initial speed vo at an angle relative to the horizontal. 1. Show that the maximum height the object reaches is given by ymax = ( vo sin) /(2g). {Hint - Find either: (a) the time when y = ymax by setting d[y(t)]/dt = 0, solve for t and substitute it into y(t), or: (b) the horizontal distance x of the object when y = ymax by setting d[y(x)]/dx = 0, solve for x, and substitute it into y(x).}

2. Show that the time it takes for the object to return to its launch level is given by t = go sin . {Hint - When t = tmax, y = 0.}

3. Show that the range, R, is given by R = g o sin2 . {Hint - Find x (= R) when y = 0 and use the identity 2(sin )(cos ) = sin 2 .}

AP Worksheet 4.2 - PROJECTILE MOTION 4. Show that the maximum range of the object, Rmax, occurs when = 45o. {Hint - Using #3 above and the calculus max/min technique, i.e., solve d[R()]/d = 0 to find when R = Rmax.}

5. Show that two objects thrown at any two complimentary angles relative to the horizontal (e.g., 70o and 20o or 55o and 35o) will have the same range. {Hint - Let 1 result in range R1 and 2 result in range R2. Show that if 1 + 2 = 90o, then R1 = R2. Also recall that sin (180o _ ) = sin .}
