CHEMISTRY FORM 4

Chapter 3: Chemical Formulae and Equations

Subtopic 3.1: Relative Atomic Mass and Relative Molecular Mass

Learning outcomes:
State the meaning of relative atomic mass based on carbon- 12 scale State the meaning of relative molecular mass based on carbon-12 scale State why carbon-12 is used as a standard for determining relative atomic mass and relative molecular mass Calculate the relative molecular mass of substances.

What is a Relative Mass?

A relative mass of an object is the comparison of the mass of the object to a standard object.

A) Comparison with the hydrogen atom - Hydrogen is the lightest atom - The relative atomic mass of hydrogen is 1

Relative Atomic Mass = of an Element

However, we dont use hydrogen as our standard. It is big difficult to use because it is a gas. -Difficult to measure its mass - It has a number of isotopes with different masses. So, cannot measure exactly. 14 - Not all elements can combine / react with hydrogen

B) Comparison With Carbon-12 Atom

Carbon-12 is used as standard because - of its existence in most substances - carbon-12 is a solid RAM of H = 1; C = 12
Mass of 1 Hydrogen atom = . mass of 1 carbon atom
1/12

Therefore.

12 hydrogen atoms

2 carbon atoms

Try this!!
C) How many times is one magnesium atom heavier than one helium atom? [RAM of H=1; C=12; Mg=24; He=4] Answer: 24 = 6 times 4

d) How many atoms of helium has the same mass as 3 atoms of carbon? [RAM of H=1; C=12; Mg=24; He=4] Answer: Mass of 3 carbon atoms = 3 12 = 36 RAM of He = 4 So, 36/4 = 9 Therefore, 9 helium atoms = 3 carbon atoms
