Therapeutic Category Corticosteroid Pharmacologic class: Glucocorticoid Use\ Indications Chronic asthma To relieve symptoms of seasonal or perennial rhinitis, To prevent nasal polyp recurrence after surgical removal Pharmacological Effects Decrease inflammation by decreasing the number and activity of inflammatory cells, inhibiting bronchoconstriction mechanisms, producing direct smooth-muscle relaxation, and decreasing airway hyper-responsiveness. Adverse Reaction CNS: headache. EENT: hoarseness, throat irritation, fungal infection of throat. GI: fungal infection of mouth, dry mouth. Musculoskeletal: back pain. Respiratory: cough, pharyngitis, rhinitis, upper respiratory tract infection, exacerbation of asthma, sinusitis, wheezing. Other: angioedema, facial edema, hypersensitivity reactions, adrenal insufficiency. Precautions/Warnings/Contraindication Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug or its ingredients Contraindicated in patients with status asthmaticus, nonasthmatic bronchial diseases, or asthma controlled by bronchodilators or other noncorticosteroids alone. Use cautiously in patients with tuberculosis, fungal or bacterial infections, ocular herpes simplex, or systemic viral infections and in patients receiving systemic corticosteroid therapy. Use cautiously in patients who have recently had nasal septal ulcers, nasal surgery, or trauma until wound healing occurs. Pregnancy category: C Breast-feeding: Use cautiously Dosing Adult: 40 to 160 mcg Oral spray b.i.d; Maximum, 320 mcg b.i.d. or 42-84mcg sprays in each nostril b.i.d. Children ages 5 to 11: 40 mcg b.i.d., up to 80 mcg b.i.d.
