830 Main Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96818 Telephone: 422-1135 Fax:423-0389 Email: HFC830@gmail.com and Sebchacko@hawaii.rr.com 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 17, 2013 PASTORS CORNER M ost of us do not worry about life after death. And it is good that we do not worry about death, or judgment , or even H EAVEN AN D H ELL. But we need to ponder, consider and keep focused on these matters, so that we can go on living our lives with Faith, H ope and Love; but most especially with the SECU RI T Y, that emanates from these cardinal virtues. I n the First Reading, the prophet M alachi warns the proud and the arrogant, that they and their evil will be burnt and disappear. Saint Paul warns those who are lazy and live on the kindness of others, that they too will be judged and punished according to their lack of effort to feed themselves. I n the Gospel Jesus warns people not to be worried about when, where and how the world will come to an end. T hey are reminded to use their wisdom and knowledge to prepare themselves by responsible behavior and action. N o one who has intelligence will deceive himself or herself. I ntelligent people, especially those who have faith, over and above their intelligence will be prudent to persevere in doing good and teaching others to do good and in that way, they all will be securing their reward and eternal life and peace , when they pass away from this life. T he politics of our N ation and that of our State, remind us of godless people making up their own laws and rules, which are bound to fail and not pass the test of Gods judgment. Let us secure our peace and future, by keeping Gods commandments, not by annulling them or by amending them. Fr Sebastian

SECURE YOUR LIVES

Presentation of MaryNovember 21
Marys presentation was celebrated in Jerusalem in the sixth century. A church was built there in honor of this mystery. The Eastern Church was more interested in the feast, but it does appear in the West in the 11th century. Although the feast at times disappeared from the calendar, in the 16th century it became a feast of the universal Church. As with Marys birth, we read of Marys presentation in the temple only in apocryphal literature. In what is recognized as an unhistorical account, the Protoevangelium of James tells us that Anna and Joachim offered Mary to God in the Temple when she was three years old. This was to carry out a promise made to God when Anna was still childless. Though it cannot be proven historically, Marys presentation has an important theological purpose. It continues the impact of the feasts of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) and of the birth of Mary (September 8). It emphasizes that the holiness conferred on Mary from the beginning of her life on earth continued through her early childhood and beyond. COMMENT: Even though the feast has no basis in history, it stresses an important truth about Mary: From the beginning of her life, she was dedicated to God. She herself became a greater temple than any made by hands. God came to dwell in her in a marvelous manner and sanctified her for her unique role in God's saving work. At the same time, the magnificence of Mary enriches her children. They, too, are temples of God and sanctified in order that they might enjoy and share in God's saving work.

PRAYING THE ROSARY When I was growing up, my mother and I would say the rosary every day together. Before each decade, she would announce the mystery and the fruit, or virtue, associated with it. I have continued the practice of saying the rosary in my adult life. Indeed, it is one of my favorite devotions and cant imagine life without it. I do remember all the mysteries of the original Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious sets of five decades. It took me a while, but I even managed to memorize the Luminous Mysteries established by Pope John Paul II. My memory had long since forgotten the fruits of the mysteries, however. In talking to some friends recently, we realized we were all in the same boat. No one knew the fruits of the mysteries of the rosary only that there were some! To rectify that ignorance, here are the mysteries of the rosary and their corresponding fruits along with a brief reflection on each one. They offer yet one more good reason to say the rosary. The Joyful Mysteries 1. The Annunciation Humility 2. The Visitation Love of Neighbor 3. The Nativity of the Lord Poverty of Spirit 4. Presentation Obedience 5. Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple Piety The Luminous Mysteries 1. The Baptism of Jesus Openness to the Holy Spirit 2. The Miracle at Cana To Jesus through Mary 3. Proclamation of the Kingdom of God Repentance 4. Transfiguration Desire for Holiness 5. Institution of the Eucharist Eucharistic Adoration The Sorrowful Mysteries 1. Agony in the Garden Contrition 2. Scourging at the Pillar Purity, Mortification 3. Crowning with Thorns Moral Courage 4. Carrying of the Cross Patience 5. Crucifixion Salvation, Self-Denial The Glorious Mysteries 1. The Resurrection Faith 2. The Ascension Hope, Desire for Heaven 3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit Wisdom, Love of God 4. The Assumption of Mary Devotion to Mary 5. The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Eternal Happiness

CATHOLICISM: The New Evangelization It takes one generation from inadequate adult catechesis to non-church attendance, and then it only takes one generation from non-church attendance to unbelief. Catholicism taught us what the Church believes and why (RCIA classes on Sunday). Catholicism: The New Evangelization shows us how to put our Faith into ACTION in todays increasingly secular world. Please join Kirk & Cami Adams, their family and others on two Wednesdays per month from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm for six sessions: Nov. 20, Dec. 4, Dec. 11, 2013, Jan 15 and Jan. 29, 2014. For information, please contact Fr. Sebastian at 422-1135 or Kirk or Cami Adams at 721-2307 or email: camikjmj@gmail.com. The cost of the materials is $30.00
