Objectives: The Student Will Be Able To

1. The document discusses functions and how to determine if a relation is a function. A function is a relation where each input is paired with exactly one output. 2. Examples are provided to demonstrate how to use the vertical line test to determine if a relation represents a function by graphing. No vertical line should pass through more than one point if it is a function. 3. The document shows examples of evaluating functions by plugging inputs into functions written in function notation, such as finding f(3) given f(x) = 3x - 2.

Functions
A function is a relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range. Another way of saying it is that there is one and only one output (y) with each input (x).

f(x)

Function Notation

Name of Function

Determine whether each relation is a function.

1.

{(2, 3), (3, 0), (5, 2), (4, 3)}

f ( x) f ( x) f ( x) f ( x) 3 0 2 3

YES, every domain is different!

2.
4 5

Determine whether the relation is a function.

NO, 5 is paired with 2 numbers!

f ( x)
f ( x)

Is this relation a function? {(1,3), (2,3), (3,3)}

1. Yes 2. No

Answer Now

Vertical Line Test (pencil test)

If any vertical line passes through more than one point of the graph, then that relation is not a function. Are these functions?

FUNCTION!

FUNCTION!

NOPE!
