Deflection of Beam

The document discusses methods for analyzing beam deflection, including the beam differential equation and Macaulay's method. It presents the equations for slope and deflection at a beam section using the double integration method, Macaulay's method, and the moment area method. Macaulay's method uses a single equation for bending moment along all portions of the beam, with the same constants of integration applied to all portions. The document provides the equations for applying Macaulay's method to find the bending moment at various points along a simply supported beam.

DEFLECTION OF BEAM

BEAM DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION: -

Consider a segment PQ of infinitesimal length of the elastic curve of a beam as shown. Let R be the radius of curvature and the inclined angle of the segment distance. Then the length As is an infinitesimal length, it can be assumed to be the hypotenuse of a right angle triangle POQ as shown.

The slope of the curve at the point P with coordinate (x, y) is given by

Where and represent the projected lengths of the segment Y- axes respectively. Differentiating the above equation with respect to x,

along X and

Usually R is very large as compared to beam span and

, the slope of

the tangent to the curve at any point is extremely small (of the order 0.001), the square will be still smaller and thus can be neglected.

MACAULAYS METHOD OR METHOD OF SINGULARITY FUNCTION INTRODUCTION: While applying the double integration method, a separate expression for the bending moment is needed to be written for each section of the beam, each producing a different equation with its own constants of integration. The method is convenient for simple cases but in complex cases it becomes cumbersome. In Macaulays method a single equation is written for bending moment for all the portions of the beam. The equation is formed in such a way that the same constants of integration are applicable to all portions. Consider a simply supported beam AB of length l as shown. Take A as origin and writing the expression for the bending moment in the last portion of the beam.
