Reading Workshop

Kinds of context readings Independent reading: students chooses text, and reads
in alone Guided reading: small group reading working with teacher. Teacher selects text according to level. (homogenous group) Literacy study: group discusses aspects of text. Teachers teaches how to share text meaningfully (heterogeneous group) *can all take place simultaneously* (for more information and comparison refer to figure 4-5 on pg 46)
Why do this?
It is time efficient
Guided reading helps teacher distinguish the students
individual need and strengths Literature study helps with meaningful discussion It is impossible to reach all students with out the use of these Workshop
Meaning of name

Independent Reading
Read for 45 min Book can be chosen by the student or assigned by the
teacher Room is silent Meant to be individually Focus is to enjoy personal reading Teachers at this time should be doing conferences, book talks, and sharing Not to be confused with free reading!! It is meant to be instructional and with a purpose
Guided Reading
Work with challenging text and a group
Small homogenous group Students will participate in discussion, read
designated text, read orally, and become aware of what the student is reading Teacher will do word work, manipulate syllables conferring with students, make observational notes
Literature study
During this time student will be developing
appreciation toward text and making connections Small heterogonous groups or full class discussion Teacher will direct discussion, provide summary of text Student will read text prior to instruction and will engage appropriately during discussion
