Overview of Unit Topic/Theme:
a) In this unit of study we will cover the topic of Resources and Settlement as well as Transportation and Communication in Canada. The
students have previously been learning about Canadian history and this is a continuation of the history of Canada. Students will be engaged
in learning about these 2 topics through reading and writing as well as watching a few short video clips.
b) 1. Transportation and Communication
1a) Define transportation.
1b) Identify the 5 types of transportation that contributed to Canadas history.
1c) Identify and describe the major aspects of the Canadian Railway.
1d) Define communication.
1e) Identify and compare types of communication then to types of communication now.
2. Resources and Settlement
2a) Describe the difference between exports and imports.
2b) Indentify the uses of 5 resources used in Canada (water, trees, minerals, oil/natural gas and soil)
2c) Identify the pros and cons of electric cars.
2d) Describe the importance of the Fur Trade in Canada.
2e) Describe the importance of the Gold Rush in Canada.
3. Apply their knowledge of Transportation and communication in Canada by completing a chapter summary sheet.
4. Apply their knowledge of Resources and Settlement in Canada by completing a chapter summary sheet

Rationale for Unit:

Students will be learning about the importance of transportation and communication as well as learning about resources and settlement in Canadian
history. This is an important unit because we live in Canada and it is imperative that students know their history and how Canada came to be.
Students will also be comparing the difference of transportation and communication between then and now as well comparing the uses of our
resources between then and now. We will connect the students learning through multi-disciplinary teaching, comparison charts and video clips.

This is a short unit and will be culminated with a worksheet summarizing each topic. Each student will complete 2 question and answer worksheets
that summarize what they have learned in each chapter.
