PIR Motion Sensor

PIR motion sensors are inexpensive modules that can detect human movement using passive infrared detection. They have a range of 10-20 meters and a 45 degree detection angle. The module focuses infrared radiation from a human body using a Fresnel lens and contains a signal amplifier and timer circuit. It can trigger alarms, lights, or other devices through a relay or buzzer for 30 seconds to 3 minutes. Adjustments allow configuring the sensitivity and time delay. Best placement is above 2 meters at a 45 degree angle.

PIR Motion Sensor

PIR Sensor Module is now readily available and its cost is less than Rs.100. It is easy to
make a Motion Sensor using this module. By using a relay, we can switch on lights, alarms
etc. Instead of relay, we can use a buzzer so that it becomes a good Gate alarm. Its range is
around 10-20 meters at an angle of 45 degree depending on the adjustment.
The Module has a Fresnel lens that focuses the PIR (Passive Infrared) from human body. It
is called PIR because it is not emitting any IR but receiving IR from the body heat of human.
The Module has a signal amplifier and Timer circuit. The amplified signal triggers the timer
which gives 30 seconds to 3 minutes output and then turns off. Its output is around 3V which
can be used to drive the Relay through a Transistor.
The PIR Module has two adjustments. The Sensitivity Adj. preset adjusts range from a few
centimeters to many meters. Time delay preset adjusts the output timing from 30 seconds to
3 minutes. The Sensor first resets by receiving the ambient IR from its surroundings. When a
human passes in front of it, the change in ambient IR triggers the sensor. For best results, it
should be placed on the wall above 2 meters from ground with an angle of 45 degree. It
works both day and night.
