Tutorial 6: Kinematics of Particles and Rigid Body

Problem 1: A magnetic tape is being transferred from Reel A to Reel B and passes around
idler pulleys C and D. At a certain instant,
P2
Point P1 on the tape is in contact with Pulley
C and Point P2 is in contact with Pulley D (
D
See Figure). If the normal component of
C
acceleration of P1 is 40 m/s2 and the
P1
tangential component of acceleration of point
B
P2 is 30 m/s2 at this instant, compute the
A
corresponding speed v of the tape, magnitude
of total accelerations of P1 and P2. Radii of idler C
and D are 100 mm and 50 mm, respectively.

Problem 2: The fixed horizontal guide carries a

slider and pin P whose motion is controlled by the
rotating slotted arm OA. If the arm is revolving
about O at the constant rate = 2 rad/s for an
interval of its designed motion, determine the
magnitude of the velocity and acceleration of the
slider in the slot for the instant when = 60o. Also
find the r-components of the velocity and
acceleration.

Problem 3: An epicyclic gear is shown in the

accompanying figure. The arm AB rotates clockwise at the
rate of 70 rpm centred at B of the fixed large wheel. The
fixed wheel rotates counter-clockwise at the rate of 35 rpm.
Determine the angular velocity of the small wheel.

B
110 mm

55 mm

Problem 4: The punch is operated by a simple harmonic oscillation of the

pivoted sector given by = o Sin 2t, where the amplitude is o = (/12) rad
(15o) and the time for one complete oscillation is 1 sec. Determine the
acceleration of the punch when (a) =0 and (b) = /12.

Problem 5: If the hydraulic cylinder shortens at a

constant rate of Vc = 2 m/s, determine the angular
velocity of link ACB and the velocity of block B
at the instant shown. Also, determine the velocity
of the end A of the link ACB at the instant shown.

Problem 6: The mechanism used in a marine engine

consists of a crank AB and two connecting rods BC and
BD. Determine the velocity of the piston at C and D the
instant the crank is in the position shown and has an
angular velocity of 5 rad/s.

Problem 7: For a short interval of motion, link OA has a constant angular velocity, = 4
rad/s. Determine the angular acceleration AB of link AB for the instant when OA is parallel
to the horizontal axis through B.
