Riverside Police Arrest Berwyn Man for Domestic Battery after Violent Incident in Car
Offender stabbed by victim who was defending herself from domestic battery assault
On Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 5:50 p.m., the Riverside Police Department received a call from the Berwyn
Police Department reporting a battery victim who had pulled into the White Castle parking lot at Harlem and
Ogden in Berwyn. The domestic battery had occurred in a vehicle that was traveling southbound on Harlem
Avenue in Riverside just before the Burlington Northern railroad grade crossing on the 3500 block.
It was learned through investigation that the offender had struck his girlfriend in the mouth while he was driving
with an open hand causing her upper lip to split open and start to bleed. A verbal argument started over some
text messages that his girlfriend had received and as he drove southbound Harlem over the railroad tracks, he
again slapped the victim. She then told him to pull over to the curb so she could get out and he refused. He
continued to verbally assault her at which time she pulled out a boxcutter-type razor blade and attempted to keep
him away from her until she could get out of the car. During this struggle, she stabbed her boyfriend in the neck
area. After the stabbing, he drove both of them to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn.
When the offender who was stabbed went into the MacNeal Emergency Room, the victim drove away. She drove
to the parking lot of the White Castle in Berwyn located at Harlem and Ogden. At this time, the Berwyn Police
were called and eventually turned the call over to the Riverside Police.
After the offender was treated at the hospital for superficial stab wounds, the victim and offender were taken into
custody.
Once in police custody, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office was contacted. Through a series of interviews
and evidence-gathering, it was determined that the victim, a 21-year-old female from Summit, would not be
charged with battery or aggravated battery for the stabbing. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office reviewed
the case and determined that she was acting in self-defense.
The Riverside Police charged Patrick D. Covington, 23 of the 1900 block of South Oak Park Avenue in Berwyn
with one count of domestic battery.
