DAY ONE:
5 min:
Gather on carpet- practice harmonica and introduce
hand signals
5-10 min:
-Read Tar Beach
5 min
-Discuss shape- identify and pronounce each shape
name in English and Spanish.
-Introduce Quilt project+
Shape worksheets
5 min
-Pass out materials
30 minutes
-Students work on handouts. If they finish, they will
begin their preliminary animal shape sketch.
10 minutes
-Clean up, celebration, line up
DAY TWO:
5 min:
Gather on carpet- practice harmonica and hand signals
-Review shapes
5-10 min:
-Read the rest of Tar Beach
5 min
-Discuss the quilt project and process
-Introduce project and materials- show example and

give demonstration with fabric and glue


30-35 minutes
-Give each student a piece of fabric and a pencil, they
must write names on the back of their fabric
-Direct students to:
-draw shapes on fabric
cut shapes out
lay out animal completely on background fabric
glue animal to fabric
10 minutes- CLEANUP
-All students carry artwork to carpet
-Choose 4 cleanup helpers to collect materials
- Students sit at their table and helpers choose one at
a time to line up
DAY THREE:
-5 min:
Gather on carpet- practice harmonica and hand signals
-Review project steps
-Show examples of work from last week
-5 minutes
-Demonstrate how to finalize their quilt squares and
decorate with marker.
-Demonstrate a table showing #3s
-Demonstrate how to proceed when finished with
individual quilt squares.

-Distribute artwork from last week
-Distribute fabric, scissors and glue
20 minutes
-Students cut out fabric shapes

students decorate animal with pattern and name

-Carry artwork to carpet
-give students the task of beginning the collaborative
portion of the quilt by laying out the work to dry in a
preliminary quilt layout.
