Lesson: 4

History: Captain Cook


Objectives: By the end of this lesson, students will have an opportunity to demonstrate
their ability to: (through class discussion and group activity)
1. Their knowledge of Captain cooks journey
Australian Curriculum:

Stories of the First Fleet, including reasons for the journey, who travelled to
Australia, and their experiences following arrival. (ACHHK079)

The journey(s) of AT LEAST ONE world navigator, explorer or trader up to the late
eighteenth century, including their contacts with other societies and any impacts.

Learning goals:
1. Will understand why Captain Cook travelled to Australia
2. Why He was important
3. Where else did he travel
Lesson overview
Students will watch a video that highlights some of the events from last lesson, so they can
see how it followings on. The next two important dates will be explained through
PowerPoint. The class will then proceed to play a game to help demonstrate how life was
back then through a role playing exercise (where each student is given a charter and they
react to the same events). To conclude the lesson students will write down some question
they would like answered about captain cook (for the next lesson).

Lesson Procedure:
Orientation:

Watch a video to engage students and give brief intro/overview about what they will

Introduce the lesson (using Hatties visible learning)
State the learning goals of the lesson (to know what happened in the next part of
captain Cooks trip)
Student will sit on floor for the Orientation part of the lesson

Main lesson

Go over the main dates and events from 12 July 1776, 18 Jan 1778 (in PowerPoint,
broken up by some more videos)
Students will take notes of the dates
Then there will be a class discussion and activity (where students in the class will
take on the role of Captain Cook and his crew at the time of these events (role play
activity))

Conclusion

Students will think of some question they would like to ask Captain Cook if he were
alive today, about his journey to Australia
Students will write their questions on a piece of paper and anonymously give them to
me at the end of the lesson before they are allowed to go to lunch

Differentiation for diverse learners:

Students who have ADHD will be given a stress ball to use, to help them
focus during this part of the lesson

Catering to the needs of students with ADHD that exhibit hyperactivity is
similar in some ways to attending to the needs of tactile/kinesthetic
learners, who need variety and action in the tasks they complete.
Students with ADHD should be given passes to leave their seats and
move around. (Campbell, n.d)

Extension Activities:

Students think of questions they want answered in the next lesson(by Captain
Cook) once they have done this they will be released to go lunch or do some
quite reading

Assessment of Student Learning:

Formative:

Class discussion at the end of the lesson (will be able to tell who understands
content; students will be able to tell you if it was fair or unfair and why)
Class/group role play- each student will be assigned a charter and do a mock trail of
the legal system (can explain to peers why its fair/unfair)

Evaluation- Objectives:

Was there enough time for the class discussion and activity?

Evaluation-Self as a Teacher:

Did the students enjoy the activity at the end of the lesson?
Did I cover all the information I needed to?
Was the lesson too boring?
Was it the right balance of content and hands on learning?
