Lesson/Activity Title: Shape Collages
Standards Addressed: This lesson addresses the Colorado Academic Standards of mathematics,
shape, dimensions, and geometric relationships.
________________________________________________________________________
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is for students to recognize the circle shape.
Learning Objective(s): Students will be able to recognize, cut out, and paste circle shapes from
a magazine into their own collage.
Your Goals for Learners: My goal for learners is to be able to recognize the circle shape in
different contexts (circles could be a cookie, plate, bowl etc).
Your Learning Principles: Students learn through interaction with each other and engaging
different senses. In this lesson they will learn have to discern for themselves pictures and
whether or not they are in the shape of a circle and then cut them out of a magazine.
Setting: This lesson will take place in classroom12 at Eagleton Elementary. I will give and
model instructions at her table. Students will then transition to working by themselves still seated
in chairs at the table.
Materials and preparation: For this lesson we will need 6 pairs of scissors, 6 glue sticks,
magazines, sample circles and other shapes from the shapes box, and paper for children to glue
their pictures of a circle on.
Introduction: (This entire lesson will be taught in Spanish) Today we are going to be learning
about circles (show children different shapes triangle, square etc,). Which shape is a circle?
Activity Procedure: Can you point something that is in the shape of a circle here in the
classroom? (Hopefully children will point to a clock or something else in the shape of a circle).
We are going to start by looking through a magazine and finding pictures of things that are in the
shape of a circle. (After looking through and finding something sample pictures I will cut them
out and glue it to a paper to model it to the children). Now you all are going to make your own
shape collage. (Kids will receive materials to create their own). This will take about 15 minutes.

Differentiation: Students who need extra help will be assisted by me at the table.
Assessment: Assessment of learning will be done by checking each collage to make sure they
have cut out the correct shape. Since there are only six children at most in the group it will be
easy to make sure they have figured it out.
Extensions: If other children need extra work to do, they can practice writing the word circulo
on their collage as well as their names.
