Questions Asked & Outcome:
What competencies are needed for the job?
- In order to be Teacher they must go through Teachers College/ Training for one year.
- They must be able to be open to new ideas and be able to easily connect with students.
What education background is required to be a tutor at the Polytechnic?
- There is no specific Educational background to be a tutor at the Polytechnic, usually hires people
from the Field experiences.
- Teaching coaching method provided at the Polytechnic.
What are the Work Experiences needed?
- Training Diploma in teaching for 3 terms.
- Teacher trainings some minimum on field teaching work , supervised by a teacher.
What skills are required?
- Depends on the style of the teachers teaching.
o Being able to understand others. (Behaviors, attitude, body language)
o Being able to build a relationship with the students. (to be able to connect with them.)
- Evaluation the state of mind of students. Being able to communicate effectively.
How did the person get the job?
- First job was at a Public High School.
- Assistant teacher.
- Quality of the Degree helped in getting the job.
What is the Job Description? (share Examples of a typical day at work.)
- Teach and develop the course adapt the course for the local reality.
- Moderate assessments.
- Mentoring for students.
- Keep to date with the information continues Research.

- Fulfil National Standards - Governmental/Ministry of education requirements.
Whats the best part about the job?
- Working with the students, because of the direct impact of making a change for others.

Whats the least thing you like about the job?


- The Growing amount of administration work. That sometimes become too much, sometimes its
also out of the job description.
What recommendations to do to get the job or a similar job?
- It depends on knowing your subject matter, the knowledge or background will allow you to help/
teach.
- Put yourself in a positions that works with people, teaching, allows you to have different points
of view.
What are the future opportunities in the career?
- Teacher Team Leader less teaching time and more managing time. (managing other staff)
- High school system Dean year group of students. 4 -5 years
- Research program working with other teachers learning how to research.
- Deputy principles they teach but also manages other teachers and ensure teachers
development.
- Teacher training in university or educational institute.

Research
Outputs of the online research about the job:
- Competencies
Based on the research the core competencies required to become a teacher in the 21st century are;
1) Professional practice simply believing that all students can learn and that learning is not just in
classrooms. A Teacher must allow themselves to take up as much opportunities to improve their
own learnings and practices.
2) Leadership and management a competent teacher is someone who can connect with the
students. The one who values true development.
3) Personal Effectiveness a good teachers understands the importance of development of
themselves before providing support and trying to help others. To carry out both Personal and
professional integrity.
4) Life Long Learners teachers must always be open to new ideas and methods, take advantages
of opportunities in forms of development. Being able to motivate and inspire others to also take
a change.
- Educational background.
There are many educational background requirements for becoming a teacher, it all depends on the
education year (Kindergarten and Elementary, middle school, high school, Undergraduate/ university.)
Im interested in teaching either in high school or university. The educational background for a high
school teacher must have a bachelors degree in the subject they are teaching.
Teachers in a 4 year university of college usually requires a doctoral degree I the subject they are
teaching. Some universities also take teachers with bachelors degree or masters degree for technical
colleges.

- Work experience.
The work experiences needed are basically having practice in teaching. Potential teachers must have
been exposed or experienced in other forms of teaching methods, they should have experienced in
preparing lessons and to deliver them successfully by adapting it to meet the students needs.
Most high school teachers require to have a minimum amount of on the job training as work experience.

- Skills required.
Teachers basic skills required are;
Excellent communication skills to be able to effectively communicate their knowledge and
Patience and the ability to handle stressful situations.
Collaborative skills- to allow students to work productively with their colleagues in projects and
assignments.

Presentation skills - teachers need to be able to both visualize and present effectively their knowledge
to their students to allow a positive learning space.
technologically skilled teachers must be able to work with different technologies and new tools that
may enhance teaching methods.
- Potential opportunities
From the researched conducted on the job opportunities in the field of teaching & education, I came
across several job titles or positions that were quite similar:
-Assistant Teacher they support in the classroom efforts done by the teacher, they work under the
supervision of the teachers to help provide extra attention to students who might need assistance.
-Teacher (High school)
A high school teachers job description is being able to plan and deliver a curricula, which covers basic
topics and advance in math, English, science, history. They report to the head teacher or their team
leader.
-Head Teacher / Team Leader. the are the responsible for providing the platforms for staff and parents
gatherings. They monitor and evaluate the performance of the school.
-School Principals. - manages and coordinates faculty, they facilitate the professional growth of the staff
and enhances the quality of the learning.
-School Counselors. responsible of counseling and guidance. It involves working with students and
assist teachers in help identifying development issues or challenges. usually the person holds a masters
degree in school counseling and must go through a licensing exam. (Jeremy.2013)
-Training and development coordinators. they focus on planning, coordinating teachers training
programs to improve teachers knowledge. They may not work directly with students but mainly with
other teachers to adapt new methods, directions of the classroom to enhance students learning
experience.
-Academic Dean (Head of School). The deans work closely with the director/ President, they supervise
all academic and faculty staff. Provide input in the management of the school/university. (Study.com)
Overall from the research made I learnt that there are a lot of job opportunities in the field of education,
not only in teaching but also in administration and managements. However my interest falls under the
teaching side.

Analysis
After doing the research and interview done with Ms. Tanya, I noticed a few similarities, for example:
one being in which that with education and teaching it mostly depends on the persons personal &
professional relationship with other people. In order to be a good teacher we should have an open mind
to new ideas and thoughts.
Second common thing is to have a skill in effective communications, being a teacher it not only means
having good presentation skills, but to be able to transmits information in a way to allow others to
understand it from their point of view.
There were not a lot of differences with the individual research and interview, maybe it was because the
questions I asked were very general and

Conclusion
Overall this report was very interesting for me to finally understand more on the field that I am aiming
to peruse in, It gave me the opportunity to make me realize if I really want this career, to summarize my
thoughts I got the chance to reflect on myself especially during the interview with Ms.Tanya.
I asked myself the question; what am I currently doing to get closer to where I want to be?
This made me realize that I still need a lot to do in order to be in the field I want. One of them is to start
participating more in teaching courses or volunteer more several educational programs that involves
teaching.
My options might be that after my bachelors degree, I can take an internship in a school or here at the
Polytechnic and probably at the same time I could possibly go on a teachers program to be qualified
teacher with the certificate background.
After a year of experience and if I see that I am enjoying and developing myself as well as others then I
would like to pursue in taking a masters degree in Media & communications or possibly coaching,
mentoring & counseling. As I believe that one of my passions is human development, I always enjoyed
helping people and witnessing the change they go through and I would like to continue doing this as part
of my career in the near future.
