as a way of remembering the ultimate
sacrifice that others had made for their
faith. The red doors remind us of the
blood of the martyrs.
Red is also a reminder of the blood on
the doors at Passover.
The red doors of churches traditionally
indicated a place of sanctuary, refuge,
and safety. Those in need would not be
captured or harmed inside the holy
walls of the church, which offered
physical and spiritual protection. Historically a church has been a place
where a soldier could not pursue an enemy.
Some believe that the doors of the Wittenberg Cathedral, where Martin Luther
posted his 95 theses, were red. Red

is the annual fundraiser for the

Ashe Pregnancy Care Center
which will be held

October 3rd at 9:30 AM

The walk will start at Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church
And take the short walk to the Pregnancy Center.
If you would like more information on the Walk for Life,
call Roger Newton, APCC Director at 846-4100 or 877-0659.
Each year the Ashe Pregnancy Care Center asks for sponsors who can give at least $100 for the Walk for Life,
or collect money from friends and family to bring to the walk. Youth groups, mission groups, small groups and
other groups can pool their money together to bring an offering.

There will be good singing, lots of door prizes and they will recognize who brings the most money in and which
group is the largest. Start recruiting!

Choosing the Best

The Ashe Pregnancy Care Center has begun a new program within the schools, Choosing the Best, which is an
abstinence-based sex education program for use in the schools and has been used effectively in many of the surrounding counties. They are purchasing the starter kits and books for sixth grade and above as resources are
found. Each book is $5 and there are teacher videos and resources. Choosing the Best is not only an abstinence-based sex education tool, but helps young people to make the best choices in all of life whether relationships, drugs, crime or a multitude of decisions they will have to make.
Thank you for your support, prayers and involvement in Ashe Pregnancy Care Center.

The Legacy Fund

A Permanent Endowment to Fund the Future of
Jefferson United Methodist Church

WHAT IS THE LEGACY FUND?

The Legacy Fund, created and owned by JUMC, is an endowment account separate and apart from the annual operating funds, the building fund or any other financial resources that the church has. Contributions made to the Legacy
Fund today and in the years to come will be used to meet special needs that the church may have. It is a timeless way
by which we can participate in sustaining and nurturing JUMC.

Gifts and Bequests will remain in the fund and the earnings will provide an annual income for the church forever.
The primary purpose of The Legacy Fund is to provide for the maintenance, repair, improvement, and addition
to church assets
Monies will be invested for growth and income, a portion of which will be returned to the church each year.

GUIDELINES

The Permanent Endowment and Planned Giving Committee, appointed by the Charge Conference, will oversee
the fund.
The Board of Trustees will determine the needs which will be met using the earnings of the fund, such as facilities
improvements, significant purchases, or other items outside the annual operating budget.
No disbursement will be made until the fund reaches $100,000.
The maximum amount of disbursement is 3% of the balance.
Only one disbursement will be taken in any calendar year.
Funds will be invested for long term growth potential with minimal expense overhead.

LIVING LEGACY GIFTS

Gifts can be large or small and given at any time. Gifts to The Legacy Fund provide a special way to remember, recognize and celebrate our loved ones. Your gifts will be acknowledged in the church bulletin and newsletter unless
you prefer to give anonymously.
PLANNED GIVING
In addition to special remembrances or other gifts, you can also make a planned gift to The Legacy Fund by including
it in your estate plans.

BEQUESTS
A bequest is the act of giving property by will. Property can be cash or other designated assets, such as land, investments, or personal property. Legal assistance is available should you choose to include the church in your will. Contact the pastor for more information
DESIGNATE THE CHURCH AS A BENEFICIARY
Life Insurance, Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), and annuities transfer assets at your death outside of a wall.
By designating a beneficiary or beneficiaries, the assets avoid probate and go directly to your designee. A phone call
to your insurance agent or retirement account broker/custodian and a signed beneficiary change form allows your to
designate your church as a primary or partial beneficiary.

Contact the church if you would like to know how to contribute.

CHURCH-HOSPICE LIAISON NEEDED

Caldwell Hospice is looking for a person to be a liaison between their organization and our church. There is a training
on September 8, 10-1 at First Baptist Church in West Jefferson for those in our area who are interested in being a
church liaison. A liaison has no patient responsibilities, but helps provide quarterly information and education about
Hospice services. For more information, please contact Delmer Minner at 1-828-750-4785 or
dminner@caldwellhospice.org.

BAPTISM
We are planning to have an outdoor immersion baptism for Chloe Henson, Karson Fazenbaker, Robbie Parsons and
Grace Zelesky on Saturday, September 5th. If there is anyone who has not been baptized who would like to be baptized in this way, please talk with Karen Miller.

MATERNITY LEAVE INFORMATION

Ashley Church, our Administrative Assistant, will be on maternity leave until about October 14. Susanne Black, Dana Colvard, Sarah Sanders and others will be substituting with limited hours in the church office. If you need to call
the church during Ashley's leave, please call in the morning.
Karen Miller is available by cell phone at 704-903-2997.

OPEN HEARTS, OPEN MINDS, OPEN DOORS

Stewardship is the act of caring and nurturing
something that is not ours. In our Christian faith, it
commonly thought of as giving back to God a portion of what we have so generously received from
Him. We see so many examples of generous stewardship in our congregation throughout the year:
giving of our time by volunteering in the food bank,
guiding our children and youth, teaching Sunday School, serving on committees; giving of our talents
by leading or participating in our music ministry, creating Mt. Everest for VBS, painting the narthex,
tending to the garden, preparing meals; giving of our financial resources through gifts, tithes and offerings to support all the extraordinary ministries of our church.

is

God uses our financial stewardship to provide a deeply rooted structure through which the witness he
calls us to make can be seen, heard and felt throughout our community. Once a year we are asked to
think about our personal commitment to sustaining our church and our ministries by making a pledge
to help meet the basic annual expenses so we remain a strong presence and witness in the upcoming
year. In the next several weeks, you will be asked to consider your financial stewardship, what it means
to you, and how it is instrumental in strengthening your faith.
So, please pray about sustaining, nurturing, and growing your relationship with God and your connection to JUMC. Youll be glad you did!
