DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MINISTRY

Twice a week, Jefferson United Methodist Church provides an environment where
people addicted to drugs can share their recovery experiences with one another
through Narcotics Anonymous. Their meeting room is intentionally out of the public
eye, so that those who participate wont encounter other people in the church building.
NA is one of the most important life-changing ministries of our church.

There are many reasons people use drugs, including escape, dealing with pain, trying to
experience a high, and dealing with impossible life situations. Given the power of
drugs to cause life-long dependency, mental illness, changes in the brain, and suicide,
addiction needs to concern Christians. Rather than being judgmental, we are called to
provide a place of hope and healing.
Some who come to our NA group are desperate to regain control of their lives. Others
are sent by the court system after they have been guilty of a crime. Some have been
attending years, and feel compelled to tell their stories so that other people can be confident that change is possible.
John Leonard, husband of Jayne Leonard, is a
counselor who worked in the field of addictions. He states, Narcotics Anonymous
groups meet worldwide to help people make
informed decisions about where they fall on the
substance use continuum (which ranges from
use, to abuse, to dependency). People who find
they do need to stop using substances range
from physicians, attorneys, clergy, teachers and
other adult professionals to the unemployed
and less educated. Drug addiction affects people of all ages from the elderly to teenagers.
Drug addiction respects no one.
The end result of addiction is jail, institutionalization, death or recovery. Narcotics
Anonymous groups are helping tens of thousands of people choose recovery and
maintain sobriety. By supporting Narcotics Anonymous here at JUMC, the church is
literally helping save the lives of our neighbors."

WORSHIP IN MAY WILL CONTINUE THE THEME "TRANSFORMED INTO THE IMAGE OF CHRIST"
I want to shed different lights on the image of Christ and explore the ways God is developing that image in us.
My goals for us in worship:
Keep searching for who Christ is by observing how He is revealed in scripture
Preaching filled with the wonder and excitement of exploring who Christ really is and what God has in mind
for our transformation in His image.
To be led by the God of Mystery and not the idol of certainty.
For the hearer to know that God is not static, but is an active and dynamic force in our lives.
THEME VERSES FOR MAY - Romans 12:1-2 (The Message Paraphrase)
So here's what I want you to do, God helping you. Take your everyday, ordinary life - your sleeping, eating,
going-to-work, and walking around life - and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for
you is the best thing you can do for Him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize
what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to
its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you and develops well-formed maturity in you.

WE SHARE OUR LOVE

We extend our sympathy to Ashley Church, our Administrative Assistant, on the death of her great grandmother,
Jessie Dillard and great uncle, David Lambert.
We also extend our sympathy to Jessica Roland on the death of her aunt, Melissa Coughlan. Her funeral was held
in our church on Saturday, April 9.

UNITED METHODIST MEN FUNDRAISER

The United Methodist Men are selling peanuts for $5 to
raise money for local missions. Peanuts are available by
contacting Paul Horan at 336-982-2682. The peanuts are
also available at Past and Present Antiques which is located at 113 N Jefferson Avenue, West Jefferson, NC 28694.
Proprietors Pam and Glen Mores do not charge a commission on the sale of these peanutsa very generous gesture.
Over the past few months, peanut sales have generated a total income
of $155.25 which will be used for outreach projects.

FOOD PANTRY TIN CAN OFFERING

SUNDAY, MAY 8TH
Our children will pass the tin cans to collect
money for Jefferson's Food Pantry during the
worship service on Sunday, May 8th. Our
usual food delivery from Second Harvest food
pantry is 15 boxes. They have reduced the
amount of food that they will be shipping us to
12 boxes for an undetermined amount of time. This means that we
will be making up the difference by purchasing food ourselves at the
grocery store prices instead of discounted rates. Any donation you
wish to make will be helpful.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE AT JEFFERSON

UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
For several years the American Red Cross held monthly blood drives
at the Ashe County Armory. In 2015, our Board of Trustees reviewed
and approved their request to move their operation to our fellowship
hall the third Thursday of every month. This is a mutually beneficial
situation, since their use of our space fits our mission to serve the
community, and our fellowship hall, kitchen and restrooms fit their
space needs.
The blood drive is sponsored and managed by a volunteer group and is
called The Community Blood Drive. On each designated Thursday,
the fellowship hall will be used exclusively by the Red Cross. In case of
major unexpected conflicts (such as a funeral with a meal) the church
may request the Red Cross to cancel its drive for that day. The Red
Cross will confine its use and the movement of its donors to the fellowship hall, kitchen and main bath rooms in the adjacent hallway.
They are to leave the bathrooms and other spaces clean and in order,
leaving no waste on the premises.
Representatives of the Red Cross and the church will meet every six
months and review the last six months usage. If both parties are in
agreement they will renew the agreement for the coming six months.
Parking will be made available for the Blood Drive at the rear of the
building. This agreement can be terminated by the church with one
months notice.

WEAR COLORS ON
PENTECOST, MAY 15
On May 15, we celebrate the coming of the
Holy Spirit to the followers of Jesus who
were gathered for the Jewish festival known
as Pentecost. The Bible says that tongues
of flame rested on the heads of the people.
The worship committee invites you to wear
any color to worship that you associate
with fire on that day.

PUPPET MINISTRY
We are starting a puppet ministry at our
church and have purchased two puppets.
We invite volunteers to be a part of building a stage, writing or finding scripts, doing
puppetry drama, or anything else connected
with this new area of ministry. If you are
interested, please contact Karen Miller.

GENERAL CONFERENCE TO MEET MAY 10-20

General Conference, the top legislative body of The United Methodist Church, meets May 10-20, 2016, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Some 864 delegates,
elected from around the world, will gather to set policy and
direction for the denomination, as well as handle other
business. Meeting every four years, General Conference is
the only entity that speaks for the denomination.
During the 11-day session, delegates will revise The Book of
Discipline, which regulates the manner in which local
churches, annual conferences and general agencies are organized. The Discipline includes policies regarding church membership, ordination, administration, property and
judicial procedures. Delegates also revise The Book of Resolutions, a volume declaring the churchs stance on social
justice issues. The statements in The Book of Resolutions are considered instructive and persuasive but are not binding on members. The assembly also approves plans and budgets for church-wide programs for the next four years
and elects members of the Judicial Council and University Senate.
All plenary sessions, worship services, addresses, and other special events will be live streamed at
http://gc2016.umc.org (or umc.org/gc2016). You can also follow General Conference on Facebook and Twitter
using #UMCGC. Users can track petitions and obtain general information about the legislative process. About
1,000 pieces of legislation are expected at the 2016 assembly.
The bulk of General Conference business is conducted in legislative committees, which receive petitions, debate
them and determine whether to approve, amend, combine or disapprove them for recommendation to the full
body of General Conference.
All proposed legislation from individuals, organizations, church-wide agencies and annual conferences is
printed in the Advance Daily Christian Advocate. The Daily Christian Advocate (DCA) is produced daily during
the General Conference session, and contains news and features as well as the verbatim transcript of the conference proceedings and calendar items.
Among the issues that face delegates to the 2016 conference are restructuring the General Church, revising the
mission agency, determining how decisions are made for the denomination, significant changes in the ordination
process for elders and deacons, continuing the guaranteed appointment for clergy, investing in fossil fuels, racism and practices of exclusivity, immigration, justice in economics, and a new hymnal that uses digital technology.
Numerous groups have submitted petitions on the denominations stance and statements on homosexuality, ordination of homosexual persons, and performing same-sex wedding ceremonies.
The conference will vote on a proposed budget for the United Methodist Church, including support of these four
areas of focus:
Calling and shaping principled Christian leaders
Creating and sustaining new places for new people
Ministries with poor people and communities
Abundant health for all.

A Prayer For The Church

Disturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves,
when our dreams have come true because we dreamed too little,
when we arrive safely because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when with the abundance of things we possess,
we have lost our thirst for waters of life;
having fallen in love with life, we have ceased to dream of eternity,
and in our efforts to build a new earth,
we have allowed our vision of the new heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
to venture on wider seas, where storms will show your mastery;
where losing sight of land, we shall find the stars.
We ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes,
and to push us in the future in strength, courage, hope and love.
This we ask in the name of our Captain, who is Jesus Christ.

New Church Mugs

The Hospitality Committee created a gift for
first time worship guests. It is a red mug
containing an information brochure, a form
to provide information about themselves, the
pastor's business card, a piece of candy, and it
is wrapped like a gift. If you notice someone
with a red cup that has red cellophane in it,
it's a good guess that the person holding it is
visiting our church. Please extend a warm
welcome!
If you would like to purchase a red mug with
the new church logo and United Methodist
motto, they are $10 for our congregation.
Proceeds will go toward purchasing new red
cups! See Mitch Phillips, the Chairperson of
the Hospitality Committee, to purchase a cup.

members of the

Committee are
Edie Merritt,
Jim Wooten,
Karin Kalmus,
Joe Duvall,
Betsy Ziroli, Loyce Horan, Kathie Hughes,
