1.7.2. Layout of Breakwaters

Breakwaters are structures designed to protect coastal areas from wave action. The layout of breakwaters includes an offshore breakwater that protects the shoreline from wave energy and sediment transport. A submerged breakwater may also be used near the shore to dissipate wave energy before it reaches the coast. Together, breakwaters are used to shelter coastal areas and beaches from damaging wave activity.
