Introduction To Real Analysis Exercises - 3

This document provides the problems for Homework 3 of the course MATH 349 - Introduction to Mathematical Analysis. The homework covers topics related to metric spaces, including: 1) Characterizing open sets in a metric space using convergent sequences. 2) Showing a function defines a metric on a set and that a given sequence is Cauchy. 3) Determining if a sequence is Cauchy or convergent in different metric spaces. 4) Showing a composition of convergent sequences is convergent. 5) Providing proofs or counterexamples for statements about interior operations on sets. 6) Showing two metrics induce the same topology except when the space is unbounded.

MATH 349 - Introduction to Mathematical Analysis

Fall 2015 - HOMEWORK 3

Due: November 16, 2015
1. Let (X, d) be metric space and U X be any subset. Prove that
U is open if and only if for any convergent sequence (xn ) in (X, d)
with lim xn U , there is an integer n0 such that, for any n n0
xn U .
2. Prove that d : [1, ) [1, ) R, d(x, y) = |1/x 1/y|, defines a
metric on [1, ). Show that the sequence (n) is a Cauchy sequence
in this metric space. Is it convergent?
3. Consider the sequence fn : [0, 1] R, fn (x) = xn in the complete
metric space of bounded functions equipped with the supremum metric,
B([0, 1], sup ). Is it a Cauchy sequence? Show that the same sequence
is convergent in B([0, 1/2], sup )
4. Let (fn ) C(X) B(X) be a convergent sequence, where
C(X) B(X) is the metric space of real valued bounded and continuous functions on metric space (X, d). Let (xn ) be convergent
sequence in (X, d). Show that fn (xn ) is convergent in (R, | |).
5. Either prove or give counter examples for the following statements:
Let (X, d) be a metric space. Then, for any subsets A, B of X we
have,
a) Int(A) Int(B) Int(A B);
b)

Int(A) Int(B) = Int(A B);

c) A B = A B;
d) A B A B;
e) Int(A) = A;
f ) Int(A) = Int(A).
6. Show that if d : X X R is a metric on a nonempty set X
d(x, y)
then so is d (x, y) =
. Show that a subset A X is open
1 + d(x, y)
with respect to the metric d if and only if it is open with respect to

the metric d (in other words, the topologies on X induced by these

two metrics are equivalent). Also, show that these two metrics are not
equivalent if the space (X, d) is unbounded.
