Grant Writing for Marc. 330

Community Arts Development Grant

Applicant: River Falls Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau

Project: River Falls Roots and Bluegrass Festival
Roots and Bluegrass Festival Narrative
Hello my name is Christopher Lynch. I am a Marketing Communications Major studying at the
University of Wisconsin River Falls. I am applying for the Community Arts Development Grant on the
behalf of the River Falls Chamber Commerce. We are applying for the Community Arts Development
Grant to help continue the growth of the River Falls Roots & Bluegrass Festival. We introduced the
festival 5 years ago. It has been very successful and has been substantially growing year after year. We
have created many activities for the community to participate in for the event which is a weekend long
festival. The amount of different activities for the community to participate in makes this festival an
excellent event. It allows everyone from the community to partake in it. Both young and old can spend
the weekend listening to great artists, attending workshops, and exploring what River Falls has to offer
the community.
A. Project Activities- The River Falls Roots and Bluegrass Festival was introduced in River Falls, 5
years ago. It started small with just a few local bands playing at different locations around town, But has
grown exponentially. We have started to attract audiences from the greater Twin Cities area as well as
other areas around Wisconsin. We went from having just a few local artists playing at locations around
town to a full weekend of events including, over 18 artist, a wine & beer tasting event, flat-picking guitar
competition, open jams, workshops, and even a petting zoo for children. The key element of our festival
is the bands and where they play. We kick off the event on Thursday night at Juniors Bar and Grill. Then
throughout the weekend we have over 18 artists play at over 15 different Bar & Grille, Restaurants, Music
Stores, and other locations around the town. We have developed a accurate itinerary of what events are
taking place at specific locations. This ensures that guests will easily be able to go to the events and know
when and where they are being held. Our mission for this event is to bring the community closer and
build a better appreciation and understanding of Roots and Bluegrass. This specific focus on roots and
bluegrass carries on the legacy and tradition that has been passed down through history. Roots and
bluegrass has many ties to other genres in music and by developing an event focused on shedding light on
roots and bluegrass it greatly benefits everyone who participates in the festival. This event benefits the
community and all aspects of it. It helps local businesses, puts river falls on the map for people from out
of town, and helps educate and bring together the community. This event is for all ages and has events
centered around both adults, teens, and children. I am very proud of what we have developed for the
Roots and Bluegrass festival here in River Falls and with your generous donation of the Community Arts
Development Grant, I am excited to further develop the event and see the growth among the community
members.
B. Outcomes- Every year we have been steadily increasing our attendance for the Roots and Bluegrass
festival. Our aim for the future is to create a connection with the greater Twin Cities area and get more
participants from that area. Last year we had around 5,000 people attend. We plan to grow this to over
10,000 in the next three years. We will accomplish this by designating funds towards marketing our event
more through different outlets around the Twin Cities. We will also designate funds towards gaining ,
developing, and retaining partnerships for our events throughout the festival. We also are able to offer
much more than just music. We have free workshops for the community to participate in. These

workshops help out with community building, music and bluegrass education. These workshops help
make the weekend more than just venues and artists playing around town. We also have a Beer & Wine
tasting event. This was very popular when we introduced it two years ago. It has grown and now includes
many local breweries that donate their time and products to the event. This is a real hit with the audience
and I hope to further develop it with future festivals.
C. Partnerships - We could not possibly do this on our own. We have many wonderful partners among
the community helping us. They help donate their time, money, and help to guarantee that the Roots and
Bluegrass Festival keeps on going. We have over 20 local businesses partnering with us for the event and
we are steadily finding more businesses that are willing to help out. With the scale at which the Roots and
Bluegrass Festival has been growing we are continuing to see more and more interests form businesses to
partner up with us for the event. With the financial assistance of the grant we would be able to gain even
more partnerships, set up areas for vendors, and for local businesses to be able to market themselves to
the many people attending the festival.

D. Marketing- Currently we have been marketing through local recourses, such as the River Falls
Journal, Pioneer Press, and other local news papers. We recently have gained the assistance of the
University of Wisconsin River Falls Marketing Communications Non-profits class. They have helped
further market our festival. They have focused on marketing to the Twin Cities area and have been
successful in gaining more participants for partnerships, artists, competitors, and people attending. With
the financial assistance of your grant we would be able to even further market our event. We could gather
research of our events in the past, and further analyze what we have been doing well and help create new
events for future festivals. Marketing is a very important tool for the River Falls Roots and Bluegrass
Festival and without the help of our partners and community we would not be able to continue to grow
the festival.

The River Falls Roots and Bluegrass Festival is a really great event. It goes to show that we have a
dedicated community that is open to strengthening our town and build our community. By rewarding the
River Falls Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau you will be rewarding a very successful festival
that is continuing to grow and develop. The Festival is very rewarding for everyone that participates in it.
It helps bring the community closer together while helping out local businesses and expanding/ education
the community about roots and bluegrass. Through all of our activities that we have developed for the
event such as, over 18 artist, a wine and beer tasting event, flat-picking guitar competition, open jams,
workshops, and a petting zoo for children, we are able to connect to the community and ensure that
everyone is welcome to the event. This event is a great investment because it doesnt pertain to just one
age group or section of the community. It includes everyone who is willing to participate and with your
generous financial donation we would be able to further grow who is benefited from the River Falls Roots
& Bluegrass Festival. I hope that you greatly consider the benefits that your grant has for the festival.
With the financial donation of the Community Arts Development Grant, River Falls would be able to
grow and develop the Roots and Bluegrass Festival into a great community building event. We would be
able to create new activities and help out local artists connect with the community.
