Throughout this project we deconstructed the everyday rhetoric occurring in American

society. We were tasked with creating our own rhetorical discourse on an issue that is important
to us and then sharing it with an audience at the Animas City Theatre. I chose to create my own
rhetorical discourse with the topic of income inequality in America. I chose to take on this topic
for my project because because I feel like this is a very relevant topic to a majority of American
people and the issue continues to grow. For this project I first constructed an op-ed explaining
my ideological bias on this issue. Then I made a ted talk based on my op-ed for the oral part of
the project.

My project incorporated the art of rhetoric with a heavy use of the Aristotelian appeal
logos. This was done by discovering facts and shaping knowledge. Throughout extensive
research on this project, I discovered many astonishing facts that I needed to include in my
presentation in order to have a deep rhetorical impact on the audience. These facts not only
impacted me, but proved to the audience how big of an issue this is in our country, which was
essential in getting the audience to become convinced of the issue and consider the Sanders tax
plan. I also used pathos in my conclusion by the use of a rhetorical question that was emotional.
3.
I was able to connect to my project by seeing how many people are affected by this
issue and how relevant it is to just about everybody in America. The inspiration for my chosen
topic of income inequality came from watching the democratic debate and seeing how important
this issue is in our country. What I liked most about studying my topic was that I was taking on a
topic that is meaningful and gaining knowledge on Americas economic system that continues to
go under. In the next election, I will be 18 and eligible to vote. I believe inequality will be a
leading issue in the race, or at least I hope it is. Its important to understand this issue so that i
can make an informed choice about the upcoming eleciton.

What I found challenging about this project was how much content is within this issue
and how I had to explain it in a 3-5 minute presentation. Right this is a very hot and heavy topic
in this country and is very complicated and there are definitely two sides to this. I would have
liked to have been able to acknowledge the other sides point of view in my presentation if given
more time. If I had to do this project over again I would have gone into more depth on certain
areas in my presentation such as the bush tax cuts. I was very happy with the way my project
turned out and felt like I had a very deep rhetorical impact on the audience.
5.
Throughout this project I have learned that rhetoric surrounds my everyday life and
that it is important to have your own ideology as it is important in making life decisions and how
you view the world. In this project I feel like I have discovered what values I uphold and what
direction our country needs to be going in. From this project I have learned that for my ideology
as a young American I value equality amongst everyone and also focusing in both sides of a
topic in order to have a deep understanding of it before forming an opinion. Overall, this project

was very meaningful and captivating as I gained a better understanding about not only my
ideology as an American, but American ideology and the rhetoric that is unleashed from it.
