IPA
The International Phonetic Alphabet
A series of symbols that make up different
sounds.
Phoneme:
The smallest unit in a language capable of
convexing distinction in meaning.

IPA - PHONEME
Vowels
They are Open (no obstruction to
breath stream)
All Vowels are voiced

Consonants
Obstruction in breath stream
Total Obstruction ex: M, B, & P
Partial Obstruction ex: S & Z

All Voiced sound is produced in the


Larynx (Voice Box)

Can be voiced or voiceless

Monophthongs

Affricate Sounds

Single individual symbols

Diphthongs
Two symbols come together to make
one new sound.
Ex: //

Has individual symbols


When you take 2 consonant sounds and
make it into one sound.
Only 2 of these exist in the English
language.
Ex: /tt/ = chh

IPA RULES
1.Symbols: Represent Pronunciation. (THEY ARE NOT
LETTERS!)
2.Each symbol represents a sound.
The symbol ALWAYS makes the same sound. (ONE
SYMBOL ONE SOUND).
3.When ever you write in IPA you always put the symbols in
slashes / /.
4.When writing in IPA there are NO UPPERCASE symbols.
All writing is done in lowercase.
