Structural Analysis-2

This document contains a practice exam for a Structural Analysis course. It has four units and eight questions, with students required to answer five questions total, selecting at least one from each unit. The questions involve analyzing frames, beams, arches, and bridges using methods like Castigliano's theorem, slope-deflection, moment distribution, and column analogy to determine values like deflections, reactions, moments, shears, and cable tensions. Diagrams and figures are provided with each question to illustrate the structures being analyzed.

(Civil Engineering) 4th Semester

CE-202: Structural Analysis-II
Time Allowed: 3 Hours
Maximum Marks: 60
Note: Attempt any FIVE questions, selecting at least one from each unit. All questions carry equal
marks.
UNIT-I
1. Determine the vertical deflection at the free end D in the frame shown in Fig. 1 using
Castigliano's theorem. Take EI = 12 1013 N mm2.
[12]

Fig. 1
2. Determine the support reactions in the continuous beam shown in Fig. 2 using energy method.
EI is constant throughout the beam.

UNIT-II
3. Analyse the portal frame shown in Fig. 3 using slope-deflection method.

[12]

Fig. 3
4. Analyse the portal frame shown in Fig. 4 using moment distribution method and draw bending
moment diagram.

UNIT-III
5. Using column analogy method, obtain the fixed end moments in the fixed beam shown in
Fig. 5.
[12]

Fig. 5
6. A two-hinged parabolic arch of span 40 m and central rise 6 m is carrying a point load of 120
kN at 5 m from right hand support. Determine the (i) horizontal thrust (ii) maximum positive
and negative moments, and (iii) vertical shear at 10 m from left hand support.
[12]
UNIT-IV
7. Locate the shear centre of the section shown in Fig. 6. Thickness is 6 mm throughout. All
dimensions shown are in mm.
[12]

Fig. 6
8. A suspension bridge of 120 m span has two three-hinged stiffening girders supported by two
cables having a central dip of 12 m. The roadway has a width of 6 m. The dead load on the
bridge is 5 kN/m2 while the live load is 10 kN/m 2 which acts on the left-half of the span.
Determine the shear force and bending moment in the girder at 30 m from left end. Find also
the maximum tension in the cable for position of live load.
