Momentum Integral Equations

Preliminaries

The shear stress of the walls has two expressions, the first related to viscosity
of the fluid, and the second is the momentum integral equation:
!
u
w =
(1)
y
y=0

w
=

2
dU

dx

+ U

U
dx

(2)

Our study will be based on the following assumptions:

1. Steady State;
2. The fluid is incompressible ( is constant);
3. The flow is two-dimensional;
4. Body forces are negligible.

Laminar Flow over a Flat Plate (U = C st )

It is reasonable to assume that the velocity profile is parabolic, hence:

u(y) = a + by + cy 2

(3)

Due to the no slip condition, the velocity of the fluid is zero at y = 0, while
at y = it should reach that of the free stream flow. In addition, the variation
of the velocity with respect to y should be zero to match free stream flow. All
of this translates to:
u(0) = 0

(4)

u() = umax = U
du
=0
(at y = )
dy

(5)
(6)

Applying the above boundary conditions to Eq.(3) we get:

 y   y 2
u
=2

(7)

Let = y/, then

u
= 2 2
U

(8)

Substituting eq.(8) in eq.(1) yields:

!
u
U (u/U )
U

(y/)

y=0

Now we substitute eq.(8) into eq.(2), and keeping in mind that
