Learning activities (step by step from start to finish, detailed enough for another teacher to follow)
Activity: Hockey Scramble
Equipment: Foam hockey sticks, Gator balls, and Cones
-
Students will enter the gym and go to the smart board to take attendance
Warm up: run around gym for 2 minutes
After the warm up students will meet in the center of the gym and listen for instructions on todays
activity
Smart board activity: Examples of long handled implements (pictures)
The purpose of todays activity is to practice dribbling with long handled implements in open space
while at the same time shooting at goals spread out around the floor
Place cones (using two to make a goal) around the perimeter of the gym
Lay soft balls in the center of the gym
Divide the whole class into two groups and give each student a long handled implement
One group will start the game as shooters while the other group will start as goalies
The shooters begin the game in the center of the gym while the goalies begin the game in front
of the goals and use their hockey implement to block the goals (one goalie per goal)
On signal, the shooters will try to dribble the balls from the center and shoot at any goal on the
floor
If the ball goes into the goal, the goalie retrieves it and puts it back into play
Stop after 3 minutes
The goalies bring all the balls to the center and spread them out before becoming shooters
The shooters then stand in front of the goals and become goalies
Add in challenges along the way if things are going well
At the end of class students will all gather in the center of the gym and we will do an exit activity
on the smart board. Their knowledge will be tested to see if they can distinguish which items are
long handled implements and which items are short handled implements.
