EVALUATION ACTION PLAN

AMERICUS SUMTER HIGH SCHOOL MEDIA CENTER

AREAS IDENTIFIED AS BASIC AND THE STEPS

RECOMMENDED TO MOVE TOWARD PROFICIENT
CATEGORY 1 - STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND INSTRUCTION
2. COLLABORATIVE PLANNING INCLUDES BOTH THE LIBRARY MEDIA
SPECIALISTS AND TEACHERS TO ENSURE USE OF LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER
RESOURCES THAT SUPPORT ON-GOING CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION AND
IMPLEMENTATION OF STATE CURRICULUM AND THE GPS AND CCGPS.
Current status: The Library Media Specialist participates in collaborative planning when

initiated by the teacher.

What it means to be Proficient: The Library Media Specialist encourages collaborative

planning among teachers who are teaching units of similar content. The Library Media
Specialist is familiar with the Georgia Standards.org website and the Common Core
standards and encourages teachers to use the resources available on GSO web page.
Action plan: Since core academic teachers have common planning, there are no after

school meetings which the media specialist can attend. Invite teachers to sign out the
media center and host a planning session in the media center once a month during their
planning blocks. The media specialist will be able to take part in the planning process
and find out how best to support the teachers and the teaching of the curriculum. The
media specialist can then take a more active role in searching for and securing nonfiction articles related to the current content. The media specialist can determine a
literacy activity for each article utilizing Writing to Win Strategies, Web 2.0 tools, and
thinking maps. For CTAE areas without common planning (often there is only one
teacher per subject area, so collaboration happens less frequently in the department),
the media specialist could attend one after school department meeting each month to
solicit ideas from the teachers about how best to support the curriculum. It will be
important to maintain and document communication with all teachers.
3. PROFESSIONAL LIBRARY MEDIA STAFF ARE ENGAGED IN ACTIVE TEACHING
ROLE/S.
Current status: The Library Media Specialist makes recommendations to students for

class projects and pleasure reading. The Library Media Specialist provides basic
orientation and instruction on information location skills.

What it means to be Proficient: The Library Media Specialist and teachers plan and teach

collaboratively so that the library media program is an extension of classroom

instruction.
Action plan: In conjunction with initiating more planning sessions with

the teachers and

securing content-specific non-fiction articles, the media specialist could invite the
teacher to bring their class to the media center and lead a session helping students to

access specific information in Galileo. This allows the media specialist to educate
students about library resources and access. The media specialist can team teach/lead
the students in the process of executing literacy strategies for that particular resource.
6. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IS ROUTINELY ASSESSED.
Current status: The classroom teacher is responsible for assessing student achievement.
What it means to be Proficient: Together the teacher and Library Media Specialist

develop a rubric(s) or another effective means for assessing student achievement.

Action plan: By inviting teachers to conduct a research session in the media center, the

teacher and media specialist will have an opportunity to help each other assess the
learning of the students. The media specialist and the classroom teacher can develop a
rubric for each literacy strategy used and use them simultaneously to evaluate student
performance.

CATEGORY 3 - STAFFING
9B. IF BASE SIZE OR LARGER: A SCHOOL SYSTEM SHALL EMPLOY A FULLTIME
LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST FOR EACH BASE SIZE SCHOOL OR LARGER. (BASE
SIZE DEFINED BY UNWEIGHTED FTE: K-5, 450; 6-8, 624; 9-12, 970)
Current status: In compliance with state board rule, but the Library Media Specialist

may be required to perform other duties on a daily or frequent basis.

What it means to be Proficient: Library Media Specialist is not required to perform other

duties on a daily or frequent basis. A part-time library media paraprofessional is

employed.

Action plan: Based on the size of the school (over 1000 students) and the state guidelines

for media center staffing, a part-time paraprofessional should be hired to relieve the
burden which is now placed on the media specialist.

CATEGORY 4 - FACILITIES, ACCESS, AND RESOURCES

11. SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER SQUARE FOOTAGE REQUIREMENTS
BASED ON FTE.
Current status: Based on FTE, the library media center does not meet the minimum

square footage requirements. Our current square footage is 2500 square feet.
What it means to be Proficient: Based on FTE, the library media center exceeds

minimum square footage requirements and is large enough to accommodate large and
small groups and individuals working simultaneously. Shelving, storage areas, and
electric wiring meet the needs of the collection. In order to meet state minimum
requirements, our media center needs to be at least 4275 square feet.
Action plan: The school system must take the lack of adequate space into account as

plans for the new high school are solidified. The architects hired to plan and execute the
new school design must allocate enough space for the media center to at least meet the
minimum requirement of 4275 square feet.

CATEGORY 5 - ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

17. ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF SUPPORT AT BOTH THE SCHOOL AND DISTRICT
LEVELS IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A STRONG LIBRARY MEDIA
PROGRAM.
Current status: The school principal provides support to the library media program and

makes time to meet with the Library Media Specialist occasionally.

What it means to be Proficient: The school principal and district administrators take an

active role in encouraging teachers to integrate library media resources into the
curriculum. School, department, and district level administrators meet regularly with
the Library Media Specialist.
Action plan: The library media specialist should be included in monthly meetings held

by the system academic coaches. This will allow media specialists to give suggestions for
integrating library media resources into the curriculum. Academic coaches provide
valuable insight about classroom needs and activities.
20. EACH LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEM SHALL SPEND 100 PERCENT OF THE FUNDS
DESIGNATED FOR LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER COSTS.
Current status: The library media program receives an allocation for expenditures every

year. This amount meets the minimum expenditure tests. The media specialist has not
received an actual budget in a few years. The media specialist submits a wish list and
waits to see what actually gets ordered.

What it means to be Proficient: The library media program budget exceeds the minimum

state allocation. Local funding supplements state allocation.

Action plan: The principal must be diligent to ensure the money allocated to the media

center is spent there as well. The principal must provide the media specialist with an
expressed budgeted number and allow the media specialist to secure resources with all
money available. Additionally, the system must provide local funds to support the media
center.

ONE AREA IDENTIFIED AS PROFICIENT AND THE STEPS

RECOMMENDED TO MOVE TOWARD EXEMPLARY
CATEGORY 4 - FACILITIES, ACCESS, AND RESOURCES
15. ONE OF THE NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY GOALS STATES:
EFFECTIVE AND ENGAGING SOFTWARE AND ON-LINE RESOURCES WILL BE AN
INTEGRAL PART OF EVERY SCHOOLS CURRICULUM. THE GALILEO VIRTUAL
LIBRARY PROVIDES GEORGIA STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ACCESS TO
EXCEPTIONAL ON-LINE RESOURCES AT NO COST TO THE LOCAL SCHOOL
DISTRICT.
Current status: Instruction and promotion of GALILEO will be in an organized manner

and conducted on a frequent basis. Students, faculty, and staff will be given instruction
and professional development in the use of GALILEO.

Instruction and promotion of GALILEO will be in an

organized manner and conducted on a frequent basis. . Searches will be administered
and taught in such a way that maximize efficiency and result in a high quality product
Best Practices and Learning Models that encourage and endorse GALILEO will be
produced, taught, and shared with other Library Media Specialists throughout the state.
The Library Media Specialist conducts Staff Development classes with the faculty and
staff. The faculty and staff will take advantage of the online courses and lessons available
through GALILEO.
What It Means To Be Exemplary:

Action plan: The media specialist must begin the year with an

orientation for all new

teachers to make sure they are aware of the resources available in the media center. The
media specialist will be a leader in the use of Galileo and give teachers a refresher each
year about how to use it, how best to find information, and what courses and lessons are
available to them through Galileo. When each semester begins, the media specialist will
conduct an orientation session with classes. The orientation should be done with every
core area course as well as the entry level course for each CTAE program. This will
insure that students are accessing the library 2-3 times each semester for purposes of
orientation and research practice. Teachers will be encouraged to return to the media
center or utilize the resources in the classroom knowing the students are informed about
best practices. These orientations must be more than a general overview; it must be
customized like a scavenger hunt with content-specific resources that must be located.
The media specialist must collaborate with the teacher to create these learning tasks
ahead of time as well as personally consult the course standards available on the
GADOE standards site.
